In Memoriam: Margie Harrington
We Wayfarers will miss you, Margie
...
Margie, Mrs. Dick Harrington, passed away suddenly after a short illness on Monday, September 10. In addition to being Dick's sailing companion (photos below) aboard Blue Mist, Margie was the editor-in-chief of many of Dick's marvellous logs and an organizational power behind the very successful North American Wayfarer Rallies.

Dear Uncle Al,

My beloved wife and Wayfarer sailing companion joined Our Father in Heaven, Monday, September 10, 2007.  She went very quickly.  Only a little over a week ago, we admitted her into the hospital for what we believed was a stubborn case of pneumonia.  It turned out to be lung cancer and already at a very advanced stage.  There was nothing her doctors could do other than make her last few days as comfortable as possible.

..  She will be buried out of St. Paul Catholic Church here in Euclid tomorrow.

I miss her deeply.

Best wishes.....................DICK

Subject: New Wayfarer Hot-Shot

Hi guys, thought you would like to know that we have a new addition to our Wayfarer sailing world.

Paul and Naomi Taylor gave birth on Sunday to a new baby boy.

Tentative Name:  "Thomas William Taylor"
B date:  Sunday, July 22 @ 3:50 p.m.

Paul, Naomi and Thomas are doing great.  New grandparents and new uncle and aunty are thrilled!

(Al's note: Paul sails W7673 out of the Mississauga SC with his brother, Mark. They are the current Canadian National champions.)

Al

I talked to the Gilchrists and they would be pleased if you would put this on the CWA site.

(l to r) Laureen Gilchrist, Anne Gilchrist, Allen and his bride, Kristina, Doug Gilchrist
(The two older ladies are the grandmothers.)

Al's note: It seems like just a year or two ago that Doug Gilchrist and his son, Allen, - then 7 or 8 years old - began to race with us in the late 80's. It was always a joy to have them at our regattas, and I wish Allen and his new bride every happiness!

Subject: New owners 10247

Hi Uncle Al,

Ron Webb here….my wife Nancy and I are the proud new owners of 10247 (built 2005 -Mark III version) …purchased last week from Bill Urie.  Absolutely love the boat.   Had a great first week on it up on Golden Lake near Renfrew Ontario.  Lots of experienced sailors and instructors around to teach and help us out.   We’re also really enjoying your information and insight into Wayfarers (and sailing).  Thanks for being such a great resource!

We are now taking the boat to our cottage on the Lyndhurst River, about 300 meters off of Lower Beverly Lake.  The river is only 30 meters wide so we need to invest in a small motor to get us up and down this stretch.  I’m thinking of a really nice Honda 2 hp four stroke that is now available.  Link is as follows…..       http://www.honda.ca/MarineEng/Models/5-2_hp/BF2.htm        Any thoughts on the suitability of this engine or general comments on motoring a Wayfarer?   The boat already has a motor plate mounted on it.  ...

Best Regards,

Ron

Subject: New Wayfarer Owner

Al,

I am an official Wayfarer owner.  I bought W1321 today.  First one that I looked at, but it was in Michigan.  Here we are hauling her home with our Mini Cooper S.  Both boat and hauler were built in England.  Isn’t that cool?

Made in England.

Imported to Canada.

Purchased from James Scane and Denise Lee.  Previous owner was Roy Knodsen who bought her in 1966.  He sailed her in Detroit with Fleet 2.  I have the original Official Measurement Form signed by James B. Peacock, USWA Chief Measurer on July 1, 1967.

She needs a bunch of re-finishing, but I could not find any bad wood in her.  Wood mast and boom and original sails made in England.  I was able to purchase for $1500.  I think that this boat has potential with some refinish work.  Pamco tilt trailer with newer wheels, tires and lighting.  Needs fenders.

Even though I am in US, can I join the Canadian Wayfarer organization?

Gary Hirsch (W1321)

Please remove my ad for Wayfarer 10191 from the Marketplace, and contact a potential new CWA member, Dr. Lourens Blignaut of Regina, Saskatchewan.

He is currently trying to arrange transportation of the boat from the Atlanta area to somewhere closer to Saskatchewan for transfer.  I know you have a substantial network of owners and friends throughout Canada and the USA, maybe you could help him arrange transportation with someone headed north.  He might be able to pick up gas costs or arrange Saskatchewan Roughrider tickets, he’s a Team Doctor.

Thanks, Lou

Anyone with ideas, please contact Lourens at blignaut.l@accesscomm.ca

Hi, Lourens:

Welcome to Wayfarers! I see that your lads, the Roughriders, won again this weekend! I have been thinking hard about how we could help to unite you with W10191 down in Atlanta, but am drawing blanks. The best idea I have come up with is to give your request the front page of my web site (http://www.wayfarer-canada.org/) for a week or so, in hopes that someone will be able to help you out.

As a new owner, you are entitled to a year's free membership in the Canadian Wayfarer Association, and I am copying Kit Wallace, our membership secretary, whom you should send your particulars if interested.

Good luck with the boat project, and do please keep me posted regarding any developments on that front.

Best wishes for happy sailing,

Uncle Al (W3854)
