Dick,

Now that sailing season is behind us for 2007 and we are thinking of next year almost exclusively, I wanted to offer my help for the 08 season.  Since we are getting many from Europe coming over, the resources are probably getting more critical.  I have never attended a rally and so will need to know what to expect in terms of helping our guests coming to the US.  I am also green when it comes to the Wayfarer sailboat, but I hope to have much more experience by next August.  So, if you think that I could help out in some way, just let me know.  I have read all of the information on the internet related to your past rallies, so I have some idea what you do during these events.
The areas where we'll need help is with camping equipment and providing space in boats.  We will need to put together a complete comprehensive list of equipment needs, but it will mainly entail tents, sleeping pads, ice chests, water container, stoves (and some pots & pans) and maybe flys to go over the picnic tables.  Some things can be purchased at reasonable cost by the Europeans from the campground general store.  I also need to find someone who will be willing to let Ralph Roberts pitch his tent on their campsite.  Ralph is a well know Wayfarer cruiser and a good source of knowledge.  Regarding sailing the main thing will be to bring along extra PFDs for guests.

I am also reading everything that I can get my hands related to cruising topics.  I noticed that in England, they have an annual Cruisers Meet in the winter months.  I wonder if that would be feasible on this side of the Atlantic?  Have you entertained that notion in the past?  Of course, it would be very challenging to try something like that without you as a significant participant based on your experiences.  I think that this would promote dinghy cruising and the sharing of ideas would be valuable for everyone, especially newbies like myself.
The Brits run a very nice cruising conference.  I was invited to attend one of their conferences a few years back and was very impressed.  They run for about three or four days but aren't cheap.  You need a large base of potential participants to make something like that work.  About that same time several of the well known Canadian cruisers (Don Davis & Tim France) were conducting a more modest scale one day cruising conference which was happening every two or three years.  It was similar in scope and near Toronto.  I attended one of these as one of the presenters.  That died quite a few years ago.  The guys got too old and it was just too hard to get people to travel long distances.  Trying to do a multiple day conference is not practical as it requires a lot of leaders and involves a lot of cost.  However, I'm glad to say that the cruising rally to some extent at least has served as a substitute.  Many of the people who attend came because they wanted to meet and pick up tips from the more experienced participants.  It would be nice to actually work in some formal on the water instruction, which we've talked about, but so far that hasn't happened.

Then, I was reading about an event called the “Small Reach Regatta” and noticed that you attended last year.  The dates for 2008 overlap the International Rally and I was wondering if you were planning on going to any of the 08 Small Reach Regatta while in Maine?  Was it a good experience last year?
The experience is a lot like our rally and you would probably enjoy it.  Tom Jackson, the WB organizer, is a great guy.  You'll get to see a lot of different beautiful wooden small boats.  If that is one of your areas of interest you will be in heaven.  Some of the folks are wooden boat builders, or wanna-bes, that know each other so there is a little bit of cliquishness.

Lastly, do you foresee a return of the Chesapeake Cruise for 2008?  That one will be cutting it close for me to get my boat together in the spring (I am pretty busy with work until the end of April), but it sure would motivate me to do so.  Uncle Al’s web page doesn’t list this one as confirmed.
Yes.  We will be doing the Chesapeake cruise as long as I can climb into Blue Mist.  Same time next year.  Guess I need to get after Al!

Thanks and I hope this message finds you in good health!

Gary (W1321)

Hi, guys:

This will start next week's Weekly Whiffle off nicely!! If you want to check the W Calendar of events and confirm those dates, I'll be happy to change its status to confirmed!! I didn't want to do that without your say-so, Dick.

Good night, all!

Subject: Calgary Fleet Report 2007

Hi Al.

There is little to report for our Calgary “Fleet” for 2007. It continues to decline with several W people selling off there boats and moving to Fireball or Cruiser sailing.  Mike Heath-Eves (W-398) retired and moved to Ottawa.  Hopefully he is sailing there.  We miss him and his beautiful old boat. The “lost” Wayfarers seem to go to family cottages on lakes in BC & Alberta.

The most popular racing fleet at the Glenmore Sailing Club (GSC) is now a “cruising” class of identical San Juan 21’s. They seem to be a good fit with the somewhat aging population of our club.  It is hard to capsize these keel boats and they are fun to sail in a very competitive class. They even have an arrangement where less experienced racers get to start each race or two minutes early to keep them in the action until there skills improve.

We still have a great time racing on the Calgary drinking water reservoir (the Glenmore Reservoir).  It is about 1.5 KM long and 1 KM wide.  Every Wednesday night there are races with 6 to 8 Fireballs, about a dozen Lasers/Laser Radial and Bytes, a dozen San Juan 21’s, two wayfarers, 5 Martin 16’s (part of the local Disabled Sailing Association) and an X class with 3 or 4 misc. boats.

Julie Toblan (my daughter) and I take turns being Skipper & Crew. Julie gets a break from her busy family & work while I get a weekly chance to chat with her!  We had some great match races with Doug Kerr and his crew in W-6181.  When they do not come out we race with the Laser or Fireball fleet.

This fall Julie & I took her two boys (Ethan - 8 and Logan - 4) out for their first Wayfarer sail.

Ethan steered the boat while
Logan towed toy boats along behind.  We all had fun.

That is about it from here.

All the best to the other Wayfarer Families.

Hi Al,

Here are 2 pics from a place you know well.  We tied up at Smith Island in September while on a five week Chesapeake cruise on our ketch.  The folks there remember the Wayfarers and spoke respectfully about the nautical self reliance and charm of the crews.

See you in Florida.  Jim

Hi, Jim:

What a lovely surprise! Those pics bring back warm memories, which tonight - with snow in our forecast - are especially appreciated.

Your ketch looks lovely! Takes a lot of upkeep though, I bet! Still, you got all that practice on W611, so I guess you're used to it!!

See you in two months or so!!

Best regards,

Uncle Al (W3854)

PS: Have put you contributions into the upcoming Weekly Whiffle, and forwarded your email to the others on the cruise. Thanks.

Al,

Thought you might like to change my report to reflect another BC Interior Wayfarer.  Please add the following:

Michael Budd            6092            Kelowna          Interested

Michael was a resident of Calgary but has or is just moving to Kelowna.  He will now join the interior group making three within a 50 mile radius. Not bad for starting from zero!  I think that makes 14 boats "interested" in doing something.  Some will likely only do things in their area while others will travel.

I am still working on identifying others but at least I have some phone numbers or emails to work from even if they are out dated. Thanks for your patience as I dig.

What is your experience with races or cruises of short duration - any weekend or always a long weekend or simply book holidays and do them anytime?

Cheers,

Nick

Al,

I have managed to dig up one more Wayfarer, this time in Port Ludlow, WA, who has expressed an interest in the potential events for 2008 on the West Coast.  He has been restoring  the vessel.

Ted Bueller        1851            Port Ludlow

Cheers,

Nick

Hi, Nick:

Great work, Nick! Have added Michael, and also Ted, to your Fleet Report for the Yearbook DVD. The two emails are also going into tomorrow's Weekly Whiffle. It may be nothing, and I haven't compared to your list, but I found a short list of Western W's in a 1985 Whiffle (newsletter) while I was researching to
create/update past winners of special awards for our Nationals - one is a recently recovered trophy that will need engraving a fair bit to become up to date. Anyway, I scanned the relevant article in case it might be of interest. See below.

I have copied three of our most active cruising sailors who will, I trust, have a more valid opinion about the length of cruises. I would expect that for starters, with a totally unfamiliar group, something very unthreatening might be best: one or two days' worth of "day sails"??

Talk to you soon. Best regards,

Uncle Al (W3854)

CANADIAN WAYFARER ASSOCIATION Minutes of the executive meeting held 24 Nov 07 at the home of Geoff Edwards, and also attended by George Blanchard, Fred Black, Hans Gottschling, Dave Platt, Al Schoenborn

MINUTES of the 12 May meeting were reviewed and accepted, following a motion by Fred, seconded by Hans.

WAYFARER 50th ANNIVERSARY CALENDARS are being printed up in England and will be mailed directly to our members, for under $10 each, paid for by the CWA.

BOAT SHOW arrangements are being handled by Geoff.  He has about 100 of  last year's brochures, which were judged to still be applicable.  We will ask Mike Codd to run off 400 more.

AGM & BANQUET are set for Sat 19 Jan 08 at the TS&CC.  We will ask Kit Wallace, when he sends out invitations, to ask if the attendees are due to receive a "Spirit Award", so that the appropriate certificates can be printed up.  Al aims to have '07 Yearbooks ready for handing out at that time.  Since last year's ran to two CDs, he is considering a single DVD
instead for 2007.  Our meeting discussed nominees for the trophies to be awarded. Winners to be notified by Al that they are in line for an award.

08 EVENTS have been published on the web site.  Our championship venues are to be as follows:
ONTARIOS  at Ottawa July 19 & 20 (to be confirmed!!).
CANADIANS at North Bay June 28 & 29; other related North Bay events on 27 & 30 June, & 1 Jul
NORTH AMERICANS at Mississauga Sept 13 & 14.

ADVERTISING has brought in $1200, bringing our current balance to $6400, according to a report given in absentia by Mike Codd.  John de Boer, who reported in by e-mail, noted that North Sails is paid up for this year, and recommended that we write off their unpaid '05 account.  This was agreed to, following a motion proposed by Al and seconded by Dave.

NEXT MEETING is planned for 29 Dec, just to confirm Show and AGM details. At Alastair's, if that date suits him.  Otherwise Geoff has again kindly offered his home as the venue.
