Happy New Year! I was quite pleased to see all is well from your Holiday letter.

... Al, it looks like a dinghy is not in the cards for a long time - I may have to set my sights on a catboat with a single sail and an easily maneuvered cockpit. I sort of like the Com-Pac Sun Cat which has a cabin or open version (see attached). Would rather do a W, but I could not recover from a capsize let alone swim well enough. Will keep you posted.

Life is good, here's wishing you & yours all the best forever,

Les

Hi, Les and Carole:

Thanks for the update and the good wishes for the new year. I too, wish the two of you continued improving health in 2008. You are often in my thoughts.

The Sun Cat looks to be a very nice boat. I'm planning to use that little bit of your email and the two photos in a WW later today. Between your pics and the fact that I have to create a slide show to summarize 2007 in 30 minutes at our AGM party on the 19th, I'm getting lots of vicarious sailing in. Keeps me pretty busy, though.

Do stay in touch!! Best regards,

Hi, Dave:

Happy New Year!! Hope all has begun well for you and the family. Things are looking up here - we're supposed to be getting 50+F starting Sunday. Perfect get ready for the Midwinters weather. And only about a month to go. Speaking of which, my crew, Marc, will be sailing the GWB Regatta with Nick Seraphinoff (W864) in his FD, which leaves me at a kind of loose end for that regatta. Any hopes of borrowing an MC Scow for it? I'd really enjoy trying one.

See you in a month! Best regards,

Uncle Al  (W3854)

Hi Al and great to hear from you!  That is terrific news; go to mx I will start looking this weekend and will find one.  I'm also looking for a Wayfarer to join you for Midwinters again - that was too much fun!

Hi, Dave:

Great! I have registered and am looking forward to the MC experience. Have begun to read some of the "how to" articles on the MC site. A question: do most of the people sail single-handed or should I be looking for a crew???

Talk to you soon. Best regards,

hi al

well heather and I are preparing the boat to go on our travels to FL. I was wondering what you do to prepare your boat to go on that length of a road trip, which is the best way down as well. also, have you any ideas if cheap but nice places to stay down there.
Great!! We don't do much that is special by way of preparations. I got the bearings checked and greased and will make sure that the trailer lights all work. Theoretically, you're supposed to have proof that your boat is owned by you and is Canadian for when you return. The shortest/quickest way down is via Detroit and I-75 but it's pretty boring. Still, it's likely your best bet for a first trip. The cheapest way to go is sleeping in the clubhouse or camping on the club grounds. Some of us also get billetted in people's homes. If you're interested in that as a possibility, let me know and I'll talk to Mike and Dotty. We were once given a list of area hotels/motels but none are very cheap. Can ask Dotty about that as well, if you like.
we may bring a tent along and maybe we'll see how things go once we get down there - we're planning on being there on the wednesday till sunday, then we head south to my grandmother's condo in marco island for 4 days.
i will try to drum up the bill of sale for the boat

I am switching my main to your style main sheet and I am also getting the proper # put on the sail and i'm having a upper draft stripe put on the sail to help me with the visual of keeping the boom at the proper angle to keep the leach proper I noticed the people in the worlds that had the mac sails had the draft stripe just under the top batten then I remember that Paul had them as well and I think this will work well for me
Sounds good to me!! Although you'll soon get a feel for how much vang you'll need when overpowered, and in less wind than that, your upper main leech tickler will tell you how far to sheet in.

I just posted a thing about how to build a carbon fiber tiller extension out of a broken hockey stick on the cl forum -
Looks quite snazzy!! Will borrow and post - with your permission, Colin.
absolutely

see ya soon,

Hi Kit

How nice to hear from you.

I think you should contact Richard Hartley and let him know that I passed his details on.

His email address is:  richard@motormania.co.uk

Whilst it may not be appropriate just yet as there are still issues to resolve around the new boat, I hope that things will be moving forward in a positive way shortly. Therefore I do think it is an opportune moment to make yourself known to him.

Kind regards

Roger

Hello Roger,

Thanks for your response. A couple of weeks ago, I forwarded more information about Hartley Laminates to David Foley and the photos below of the new boat I took in Denmark last summer - to whet his appetite, as it were.

At this point I haven't heard of any further developments from David, but perhaps this conversation will give him the encouragement to start a discussion with Richard Hartley.

All the best,

Kit Wallace (W1037)

Hi Al ... Happy New Year and good sailing!

Thought I would check in and let you know that the Coast out here is still providing good sailing weather - assuming that neither the cold nor rain dampens one's enthusiasm.  I have been asked to go sailing twice over the last two days - unfortunately, I have had to decline for family reasons.  On the other hand, I did manage to put the fifth coat of varnish on the rear hatch and do the second-to-last sanding on my Wayfarer mast before starting the 10-coat regime of varnishing.  Sorry, I am a varnish nut!
Wow! I'm impressed!! I should be letting you set a good example for me!!

Which brings up another point. I am looking for another wood mast or boom. Are you aware of any?  Of course, I could also grab an aluminum rig for racing and for a spare - know of any?
I can post a request for you and will also make this a part of Monday's WW. There should be some wooden masts/booms around - problem might be in the shipping? Please send me the "wanted ad" as you would like it worded. Used metal masts/booms are virtually never available!!

Last but not least, I have decided that one of the events out here will be a sail to Jedediah Island.  It is relatively close to the Vancouver area but can be as wild as one likes.  It will likely be a long weekend or longer exploration.  The other event will likely be at Summerland.  I am hoping to set the dates sometime soon with both events likely in August as it looks like I will be in England in July.
Do keep me posted, Nick, and I'll add your events to our official Calendar at http://www.wayfarer-canada.org/00coming.up/001ComingupIndex.html

Cheers,

Nick (W982)

Hi Al,

I am resending the list as there have been two changes since I forwarded it to you.  The first, is that Garry Salmon's Wayfarer #3036 has been sold to Richard Patterson in Victoria.  I believe Richard has previously owned a Wayfarer before and he certainly knows of you and the CWA.  I gather he will join the CWA.  Hence, I would appreciate you removing the boat from the "For Sale" section of the web site.  The second change is that I finally heard from Gerry Warren, the lost Wayfarer in Sidney.  He surfaced after a 10,000 mile road trip!  He said he should have towed his Wayfarer.  Anyway, his information is correct as listed and I have encouraged him to be part of the CWA.  He is a cruiser, like Richard, but has also moved up to a t-bird!  Yet, he loves the Wayfarer.

That is it for now, other than the fact that the mast and boom have been moved into a heated room so as to start varnishing.  It will take about 1-2 months to get the ten coats on!

Cheers,

Nick

Uncle Al,

Well, I couldn't resist the temptation to try the semi-official Wayfarer drink - so I mixed up a couple of "Dark & Stormys".  Actually, not too bad, although they sound awful!  I don't think they will replace my normal fare of  single malt scotch and water; or Gin and tonic... but actually not too bad!

My son doesn't want to camp at Rock Hall (I guess he is becoming a "girly man"), but I have a nephew who lives in Annapolis so I think we'll probably stay with him during the regatta.  Son can't get off in time to get there for river race, but we'll be there for the main races.  He also wants to go to NY while we're close - so taking a side trip after the sailing and after a few Dark & Stormys.

Wish I had been off today - 75 degrees in Kansas City today - but snow forecast for Thursday!!
