Thanks, Al.

This brings it much more up to date.  I didn’t see anything in the writing that needs correcting... We will have a change in venue for the Poker Event – John Richardson will be hosting this year as the McNutt cottage is being used by the family this year.  We will have a new course layout for the event, of course.  We are going to use the same route for the National Long Distance Race as we did in 2007.

As for the rest of the information and other links, Carol, I and the rest of our organizing team will be providing updated info as time goes on.

Hi again, Dave:

Have begun to fine-tune the NBWW promo page. Need to know a couple of things:

Is John Richardson Dave's dad? Did he sail a W in the Trout Lake fleet? If so, what number?

Where is John's cottage in relation to the McNutts'?

Will copy Dave R., in case he has light to shed on any of the above?

Thanks,

Uncle Al  (W3854)

John is Dave’s dad.  They used to sail W108 in the North Bay fleet.  Their place is at Pilot Point (half way between stop 1 and 2 where you turn right to go into Dugas Bay) so you can see why there will be a change in routing for this year...   We can add additional info as the details develop over the next few months.

We did, indeed, get the nasty stuff.  We had to leave the car a km away from our house last night as the road was too icy to make the hills even with AWD and winter tires.  Roads are better today but the ski hill is closed as it is too dangerous for skiing.  Too bad since it is a holiday.  Family Day will be enjoyed mostly indoors it would seem.

Best regards,

Dave

Thanks, Dave. Have fine-tuned the Poker Race promo a bit. Let me know any further changes that need to be made.

Boy! Sounds like you guys got the weather far worse than we did. Hope you can figure out something useful to do indoors. Julia and I are reading (and answering emails of course).

Take care,

Hi Al

I see Dave H beat me in answering your questions. I still have the spinnaker from W 108. The old woodie was made from a kit and my Dad always complained that it would only point well on one tack. I also remember how much work it was to get it ready for sailing season.

I have just arrived at my office. Thought I would get a little work done this afternoon, given the poor weather. Enjoy your reading.

Regards,

Dave (W4782)

Subject: Having overcome ...

... most annoying procrastination & finally paid my '07 & '08 dues, I no longer feel such a freeloader & so dare to write. Thank you for such delightful pictures. They revive the body that has just moved mountains of snow, with more coming.

As a relative newcomer to Wayfarers I'll venture an opinion on the Mk 1 etc discussion. When I bought W5626 , I had no idea about Mks. For a friend the "Abbott " name was enough of an endorsement. WRT capsizing, the answer is simple, DON'T DO IT. I've come close several times, but I believe that the double chine feature, which aesthetically I dislike, has functionally caught me, just in time. As a beginner, I humbly offer this advice:
  1. Take your time.
  2. Use less (or smaller) sail area until you are perfectly comfortable.
  3. Do NOT cleat down both sheets at the same time.
  4. Sail as much as possible in as varied conditions as possible ( remembering 1. & 2. & 3.)
  5. Flat is best, so use your extension & hiking straps. You are much less apt to be dunked, when you are flat to start with & it'll give you a little bit more time to adjust if a sudden gust hits you unannounced.
  6. Read everything on the Wayfarer website. There's gold there.
Sensual sailing,

Boustrophedon

Google  Canadian Shark Association scroll down to Shark Sailboats, Shark 007 click on, then down to a box with " Did someone say ...RACING", then click onto Racing Basics. I realize that our website already has excellent information on racing but this is an extra that I found helpful & so recommend it to others. Dave W5626

Thanks, Dave. Got your other email, too. Glad to have you as a member again. Did you get the Wayfarer 50th Anniversary Calendar? If not, send me your mailing address and I'll send you one. They are extremely nice!!! I have put the item you have recommended - Racing Basics - in the WIT - and I even got the author's permission to use the material!!!

Take care,

... Would appreciate the W calendar.   see above

BTW, I followed advice that I received from an earlier question & replaced the small "u" shaped bracket under the boom with a cloth sleeve about 3' long. So I don't catch it on the pfd anymore. how is that sleeve attached to the boom? I think I could use one of those now that you mention it - do you want to send me some dimensions?

You may remember that I tried a centre main sheet attachment but felt it distorted the sail trim. Your fixed bridle works much better. Moved main block to centre of middle thwart where it is easier to duck around when tacking & is closer at hand when I'm usually sitting on the side deck with one foot on either side of the thwart in an effort to keep her flat. Sounds great - mine is just aft of the thwart which is already occupied by my compass

Find it amusing that the portsmouth system imposes a handicap for single-handing. It's a lot better with an extra pair of hands even if the "crew" has never sailed before. I think that depends on wind conditions - as long as the winds are light enough that one person can hike the boat down, it's a significant advantage to be making the sails push that much less weight.

Thanks again Dave W5626.

Subject: Magic Muscle Power Box

Hi Uncle Al,

In response to the request of John Hemingway and Robert Mosher in the Weekly Whiffle (080204) I am happy to report there are at least two alternative sources for new muscle boxes:

http://www.rwo-marine.com/rig_adjust.html
http://www.sprenger.de/hs/abt_boot/produkte/boot_08gesamt.pdf
WARNING: The latter link points to a 25 MB PDF file!  The muscle boxes are on page 90 (bottom left).

When Swiebertje was built, I had a discussion about this matter with Ian Porter. Ian is a strong opponent of muscle boxes and advocates the use of cascade systems instead. His arguments is that an 8:1 cascade only needs 3 sheaves
and hence has less friction then a muscle box that requires 8 sheaves for the same purchase. Any muscle box with more than 8 sheaves (2 x 4) is senseless because the extra purchase is totally lost on friction while a 4-sheave (16:1) cascade system is perfectly feasible.

Though I agree with his analyses, I still had him mount a Spengler Muscle box because I like the neatness of the system. A cascade with all tension off is just a pile of rope on the floorboard mixing with all other rope work.....

The Spengler muscle box is top quality German precision craftsmanship. I have only seen the RWO muscle box from a distance but people that have it seem to be satisfied by it.

Best wishes,

Ton (W10445 - Swiebertje)

I understand that you used to own this boat (W 854) Is this correct? If so do you have any old photos I could see of her. I have just bought her and am planning on restoring her and would like to see what she looked like.

I would also appreciate any history of the boat that you might have.

thanks

Hi, Roy:

Welcome to Wayfarers! I assume you are in Toronto - Interlog was my first-ever service provider, a blast from the past, though now I am using cable from Cogeco here in Oakville. Good luck with the restoration. I am copying two local Wayfarer experts on the subject, Hans Gottschling (W938) and Kit Wallace (W1037). The latter is also our Membership Secretary who will be happy to sign you up for a year's free membership in our Canadian Wayfarer Association once you send him your particulars.

Regarding W854, it was first owned by Ron Gillespie, who is the former owner of my Wayfarer, #3854. Last I heard he was in Dundas, ON. If you can locate him, he would doubtless have some pictures of W854 TRYFANN which as I recall was a medium shade of navy blue with a white racing stripe about one inch in diameter - see the BW pic at http://www.wayfarer-international.org/WIC/past.Worlds/1976/1976report.htm if you want an idea of the stripe as it looked in 1976 just before I bought the boat.

Good luck, Roy, and do stay in touch. Let us know if we can help you out with any advice on Wayfarers.

Best regards,

Uncle Al  (W3854)

PS: If you care to rummage, W854 should start to make appearances in our Canadian Wayfarer newsletters archives at http://www.wayfarer-canada.org/Wayfarer.history/old.newsletters/newsindex2.html around 1965 or 1966. Ron G. raced her pretty keenly.

Subject: Wayfarer cruise

Al:

I am sending you a log Allan Parry wrote up on a vacation we had last June.  It wasn't really a cruise since we planned to stay at campgrounds and day-sail or travel around the countryside by car. There are photos of our trip as well as a few charts.  A couple of the charts of PEI are stained.  Although it looks like I was using the charts as beer coasters, the stains came when I capsized my Wayfarer in PEI two years ago and the chart case wasn't completely water-tight.

Prince Edward Island is a pleasant island to vacation on.  I have trailered my Wayfarer to PEI on two previous years plus I have gone there on cycling/camping vacations by myself or with the family.  The Confederation Trail is a well maintained cycling trail which stretches over most of the island and it is always close to good sailing spots. Many of the bays and rivers of PEI are encumbered with mussel farms which can make sailing difficult at times though.

I recommend the Eastern coast of PEI from Murray Harbour to Souris and the north shore behind the barrier beaches from Alberton to Malpeque Bay as interesting cruising areas for visitors with Wayfarers.  The bays behind Prince Edward National Park such as Tracadie, Rustico, and New London Bay might be interesting also, but this section of the coast is where the tourists congest and I avoid the area to camp.

Two helpful books for visitors with a cruising dinghy are:
  • Harbours & Marinas of Prince Edward Island by Sam Cioran
  • Paddling Prince Edward Island by Bob Gillette
I hope you can put the article on your web site.  It is an excellent web site for all classes of small boat cruisers.  Perhaps I'll see another Wayfarer in PEI sometime.

Best wishes

Jim

Thanks for all your time and expertise in putting our vacation trip on your web site.  I believe you and Dick Harrington have between you kept the Wayfarer dinghy as an active class in North America for both racers and cruisers.

Thanks again,

Jim

Hello All !

Being upgraded all the way from CPH to the highest service level - as a 1st Class PAX - flying to BKK was a real treat, since it includes a el-controlled *bed* with marvellous resting possibilities, even more - to me - important that the splendid gourmet cuisine offered!

Arriving here at the Rung Ruang family house and being joyful, heartfelt welcome by fam. and friends is naturally equally a great treat, and because SAS departs CPH late at night, the arrival thereof is in the afternoon here, and therefore it is very convenient and more or less trouble-free to stay awake to the ordinary night bedding hour.  Thus getting the most out of the pleasant and smooth temperatures plus gentle change into a marvellous sunset and velvet soft night.

An important fact for me is the thriving of my oldest son in light summer clothes and footwear, especially fond of the green garden with lovely flowers.

Just letting you know we are enjoying life! Best wishes+kind rgds. Ken t.y.+ K.t.o.W1348'Maitken'
