Subject: The Brothel Parrot

Good one.

The Brothel Parrot

A woman went to a pet shop & immediately spotted a large, beautiful parrot.. There was a sign on the cage that said $50.00. 'Why so little,' she asked the pet store owner. The owner looked at her and said, 'Look, I should tell you first that this bird used to live in a house of prostitution and sometimes it says some pretty vulgar stuff.' The woman thought about this, but decided she had to have the bird anyway.

She took it home and hung the bird's cage up in her living room and waited for it to say something. The bird looked around the room, then at her, and said, 'New house, new madam.' The woman was a bit shocked at the implication, but then thought, 'that's really not so bad.'

When her 2 teenage daughters returned from school the bird said, 'New house, new madam, new girls.' The girls and the woman were a bit offended, but then began to laugh about the situation, considering how and where the parrot had been raised.

Moments later, the woman's husband, Keith, came home from work. The bird looked at him and said,

'Hi, Keith.'

If this is the famous Uncle Al of the Canadian Wayfarers Association, Hello. My name is Erik Knuth, and I live in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA. One of your boats has drifted across the lake and is in my boathouse. It is a Croce & Lofthouse Wayfarer Mark I (woodie). It was donated to the Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies here in Erie with a Mark II gbc.
They kept the fiberglass boat for sailing classes and unloaded the woodie on me.

I will be attempting a restoration and have been collecting books and other resources for this spring project, or lifetime project…whatever. I am from a Norwegian family that builds and restores mostly canoes now, so this will be an adventure. Builders plate has been removed, importers laminated sticker was underneath a tiller stay I removed. (C&L Toronto). The number 889 is burned on the transom, making it pre 1968 “I think”.

How do I track these boats down to make sure I am restoring it to its proper form? Any info helps.

Hope this finds you well and anticipating a long sailing season.

Hi, Erik:

Welcome to Wayfarers!! What a fortunate fellow you are - not only getting a wooden Wayfarer but also being located practically next door to Dick Harrington (Cleveland). Dick (copied) has practically the twin boat to yours, W887, Blue Mist. He is not only North America's premier W cruiser but also pretty knowledgeable about restoring wooden W's. And what he doesn't know, he can find out for you.

Sounds to me like your W would have been built by Small Craft of Southampton and imported by Croce and Lofthouse in Toronto, likely in 1964 or 1965, given the boat number.

Again, welcome to our class. We look forward to sailing with you!!

Best regards,

Uncle Al  (W3854)

Erik,

W887 was built by "Small Craft" in South Hampton, England in 1964.  You are welcome to inspect her any time as well as consult with me.

Restoration means different things to different people.  Blue Mist has been "improved upon" to make her a seaworthy boat in challenging sea conditions.  That is to say, being well over forty her old glued joints could not be expected to keep her afloat under stressful conditions.....so she has been judiciously reinforced with modern epoxy glue.  If your idea of restoration is more on the order of museum showing purposes then of course you don't want to follow my path.  If you really want to sail her to her maximum I can give you good advice.  We have a "woody group" who have lots of valuable knowledge and who will be glad to provide advice.

DICK

WHERE DID THE WHITE MAN GO WRONG?

Indian Chief Two Eagles was asked by a white government official, "You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done." The Chief nodded in agreement. The official continued, "Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?"

The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied. "When white man find land, Indians running it. No taxes, No debt, Plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water; women did all the work, medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; All night having sex."

Then the chief leaned back and smiled. "Only white man dumb enough to think he can improve system like that."

Subject: correct dates and other Ontarios matters

Al

I was looking at the list of participants for the Ontarios this coming summer (if it ever gets here) and noted that you have correct dates for the event but the list of participant seems to be from 2006.

Question - is this an 06 list or a current list with the wrong date on it. I am starting to get active on the organization and will feed the names of  skippers and crew who intend to participate to you for addition to the list as I get them.

I have yet to update the web site and hope to have much of it done by next weekend. Going to Toronto for new sails tomorrow and look forward to having a greater chance of keeping up with you in events this summer.

Cheers

Robin

Hi, Robin:

The participant list should have read 2007 - and then I usually leave the previous year's listed participants to start the next year - until I hear different! But since you are planning to feed me real info (something I rarely get from organizers!), I have blanked out (printed in white!) all the names on the 2008 list except Marc and me whom you may consider as confirmed.

Hope your sails forage was a success!! I trust you'll be giving us all a good run for our money this year - will your health permit you to sail? Sounds like it, which is the best news yet!!

Two Cows

DEMOCRAT

You have two cows.
Your neighbor has none.
You feel guilty for being successful.

REPUBLICAN

You have two cows.
Your neighbor has none.
So?

SOCIALIST

You have two cows.
The government takes one and gives it to your neighbor.
You form a cooperative to tell him how to manage his cow.

COMMUNIST

You have two cows.
The government seizes both and provides you with milk.
You wait in line for hours to get it.
It is expensive and sour.

CAPITALISM, AMERICAN STYLE

You have two cows.
You sell one, buy a bull, and build a herd of cows.

BUREAUCRACY, AMERICAN STYLE

You have two cows.
Under the new farm program the government pays you to shoot one, milk the
other, and then pours the milk down the drain.

AMERICAN CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You sell one, lease it back to yourself and do an IPO on the 2nd one.
You force the two cows to produce the milk of four cows. You are surprised
when one cow drops dead. You spin an announcement to the analysts stating
you have downsized and are reducing expenses.
Your stock goes up.

FRENCH CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You go on strike because you want three cows.
You go to lunch and drink wine.
Life is good.

JAPANESE CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and
produce twenty times the milk.
They learn to travel on unbelievably crowded trains.
Most are at the top of their class at cow school.

GERMAN CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You engineer them so they are all blond, drink lots of beer, give excellent
quality milk, and run a hundred miles an hour.
Unfortunately they also demand 13 weeks of vacation per year.

ITALIAN CORPORATION

You have two cows but you don't know where they are.
You break for lunch.
Life is good.

RUSSIAN CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You have some vodka.
You count them and learn you have five cows.
You have some more vodka.
You count them again and learn you have 42 cows.
The Mafia shows up and takes over however many cows you really have.

TALIBAN CORPORATION

You have all the cows in Afghanistan, which is two.
You don't milk them because you cannot touch any creature's private parts.
You get a $40 million grant from the US government to find alternatives to
milk production but use the money to buy weapons.

IRAQI CORPORATION

You have two cows.
They go into hiding.
They send radio tapes of their mooing.

POLISH CORPORATION

You have two bulls.
Employees are regularly maimed and killed attempting to milk them.

BELGIAN CORPORATION

You have one cow.
The cow is schizophrenic.
Sometimes the cow thinks he's French, other times he's Flemish.
The Flemish cow won't share with the French cow.
The French cow wants control of the Flemish cow's milk.
The cow asks permission to be cut in half.
The cow dies happy.

FLORIDA CORPORATION

You have a black cow and a brown cow.
Everyone votes for the best looking one.
Some of the people who actually like the brown one best accidentally vote
for the black one.
Some people vote for both.
Some people vote for neither.
Some people can't figure out how to vote at all.
Finally, a bunch of guys from out-of-state tell you which one you think is
the best-looking cow.

CALIFORNIA CORPORATION

You have millions of cows.
They make real California cheese.
Only five speak English.
Most are illegal.
Arnold likes the ones with the big udders.

Hi Mark,

Am writing to you from Seattle where I have been living for the last 11 years.  I am from Toronto, was a member of TS&CC for a few short years (roughly 1994? To 1997?).  Still have the boat W6973 I believe is the number.  Almost no one has heard of Wayfarers around here so needless to say, getting sails cut and tuned is not practical. Thus would be
interested in your sails if still available.  Shipping is going to be nasty but I see they were made by Raudaschl which I recall
was probably the best sail maker (for Wayfarer) in the world.  Owner's name escapes me but I have a jib made out of profile square Dacron, incredible stuff.  But my main is past due for replacement.

In case you are a member of TS&CC, there was a Russian (Ukrainian?) member racing Dragons, Boris (last??) who I am sure will remember me.

Roger

Thanks, Mark and hello, Bill!   So you are visiting Seattle in May; that's great, it would be super to meet.  You have a standing invite for dinner with my wife, Ruth, and me.  The Wayfarer is parked beside the house, which is in Mill Creek, a 25-minute drive due north of Seattle. I've got all kinds of sailing stories to share with you.

What is your itinerary? I work Monday-Friday (flex hours but generally 8am to 4:30).   I play hockey on Mondays (4-6pm), Thursdays (5-7pm) and Fridays (7-9pm) but other than that, I am flexible. Heck, we might even be able to get a sail in...

While down here, if time permits, you should try to visit Mr. Rainier/Mt. St. Helen's or the San Juans (Friday Harbor or Rossario), each are a full day's excursion.

FYI:  I purchased Beaker from John Pocock, who I believe was the official Wayfarer "measurer" for some years around Ontario.

Hi, Roger:

How lovely to hear from you, albeit indirectly through Mark. I remember John Pocock and his Wayfarer, which I recall as being W7385??? We often raced with John and I think I even got to "press-gang" his daughter into service as my crew one day long, long ago. It's very kind of you to invite Bill Wallace (W3130) despite your obviously busy schedule (although I suppose three nights of hockey per week can hardly be called suffering - except perhaps for your wife!!). With your permission, I will post your email in Monday's Weekly Whiffle.

I officially sail out of TS&CC (though W3854 lives in my garage, poised to go away to regattas most summer weekends), and I know Boris (Kuzmin?) and his Dragon. Boris has taken some lovely W regatta pics for us in the past few years.

Just to make sure they are aware of your Wayfarer presence in the area, I am copying Tim Koontz, the USWA's Pacific NW Rep (who tends to be too busy with young kids to do much W organizing) and Nick Parker, our CWA Fleet Captain for BC (and unofficial general Pacific NW rep who has been working very hard to track down any and all Wayfarers in the north-west while organizing a W get-together or two for the coming summer). Also copied is new W owner, Denny Quirk (W10192) in Anacortes who has a trailer question and who I want to make sure gets put in touch with the reps and with you, too - W's being a bit thin on the ground as you observed.

Best regards,

Uncle Al  (W3854)

What a great surprise to hear from you, too, Al!

I have to tell you I am impressed that you know my Wayfarer number better than I do!  Yes, it is W7385!   Never mind the number I quoted earlier....can you tell I haven't been using the boat much (I hate to admit).

I actually called John Pocock about 6 months ago, right out of the blue, asked him if he could remember a "life changing moment that happened (and quoted the date I purchased his Wayfarer...I think it was May 1994??) .  Anyway the hint did not spark his memory so I let him in on the story and he was delighted to hear from me.  I called him because I too have an EXPLORER trailer issue!  The story starts 11 years ago when Ruth and I drove to Seattle.  Crossing the boarder at Detroit, the guards gave me a sheet of paper and said "don't lose this".  I promptly filed it into oblivion.  The boat was stored for the first 4 years because we decided to purchased a 41' Lord Nelson and become live aboards at Elliot Bay Marina when we first arrived.  We have since sold that boat to purchase a house, and my interest in the Wayfarer returned, but of course I needed a Washington license plate.  On seeing the Ontario permit, they asked for the customs paper work.  I contacted customs but to no avail.  And so the trailer remains unlicensed and I have to keep a stiff eye in the rear view mirror looking for "cops" any time I use it!    I called John to ask him if he happened to know where the Explorer dealership was located (no hits on Google) so I could get a copy of the safety certificate.   That's when I learned of the Abbott fire!  The story just keeps getting nuttier!   I think I am going to have to tow the trailer to Vancouver, turn around and re-import it.  There is supposed to be a VIN number stamped somewhere on the trailer but I painted it and cannot find it anywhere.  Any ideas?

A big hello to Boris.  Some of my most vivid memories, other than trying land on the TS&CC docks during those summer storms and 30 mph winds, were crewing on his Dragon around Centre Island and working the weekday club races.  Glorious memories!  Many thanks, Boris!   All TS&CC members have a standing invite to visit Ruth & me here in Seattle.

As for Raejon, we lived aboard for 3.5 years, then rented an apartment in Ballard, and moved the boat to Anacortes Marina.  After a year we decided to put her up for sail and it took 3 years to sell her (the dot com crash flattened the economy 3 months after we listed).  During that time we used Raejon like a cottage, driving up to Anacortes (1 hour) rather than 8 hours of sailing, including a treacherous crossing of the Straits of Juan De Fuca (Admiralties Inlet to Lopez Island).  We could thus be in the San Juan islands an hour later. So the 3 years were not wasted, in fact there were times we were not sure if we wanted to sell.

After the boat was sold, we bought a house in Mill Creek with RV parking, which is where I am gearing up to build our next boat.  It will be a Tom Colvin "Gypsy" built in steel, and the intent is to use it to return to Canada, Nova Scotia, by sail, where we plan to retire.  The RV parking space is too small for Gypsy, so the plan is to build the vessel in two halves (modular) then weld them together.  The next step after launch is one heck of a big garage sale!

Good hearing from you "Uncle Al"!  and a hearty hello to all of TS&CC.

Roger

Subject: CWA Exec meeting Minutes from 5 April 2008

Subject: W Exec Minutes

Minutes of the Executive Meeting of the CANADIAN WAYFARER ASSOCIATION held 5 April 08 at the TS&CC

In attendance were: Fred Black, Mile Codd, Geoff Edwards, Hans Gottschling, Dave Platt, Alastair Ryder-Turner, Al Schoenborn, & Kit Wallace. (George Blanchard was not able to attend, but had sent along copies of an agenda and the minutes of the last executive and the last general meetings.)

MINUTES of the 29 Dec Exec were adopted as printed, following a motion by Fred / seconded by Mike.

WIC NEWS from Al is that all parties have endorsed the compromise solution worked out between UKWA and Hartley Laminates.  Kit showed Hartley's W brochure, and passed on the news that HL has received a number of queries from potential North American builders.  No deal is imminent.
There has been correspondence about the commissioning of large pennants to be flown on the host's flagpole during Wayfarer events.  This appears to be of more interest in Europe than here.  (The USWA have made their own.)
Al/Mike moved that the CWA decline with thanks.  Carried.

ARCHIVES that chairman George has collected over the years have been boxed up and are in the care of Tom Wharton.  They are due to go to Doug Netherton in Ottawa, possibly taken up there by a competitor going to the Ontarios at LDSC.  Mike will look after this.

EVENTS as published on our web site have all been confirmed, and Geoff's order for flags was discussed.  A virtual copy of the Events Whiffle will be posted, and a few hard copies printed for those of us who have not elected
to go with an e-membership.

MEMBERSHIP in the CWA stands at over 50, which is pretty good for so early in the season.  Kit proposes that since almost all have chosen the cheaper (and less troublesome) e-membership, we discontinue offering
mail-memberships.  Action on this will be held over until next January's AGM.

TREASURY contains something in excess of $3000, after Mike reimbursed Kit for Yearbook mailing costs.  The $400 that covered Boat Show expenses was considered money well spent.

NEXT MEETING will not be until the autumn.   With only the limited number of  Events Whiffles to be mailed this year, Al and Kit say they can handle it. There is no other executive business foreseen before the sailing season.

Subject: Don Rumble series & Nationals alternative proposal

Hi, Dave:

I'm just in the process of putting together the 2008 CWA Events Whiffle and have had what I consider to be a "brain wave": I think we should "separate" the Don Rumble series and the Nationals to the extent that the Nationals will still be based on Saturday's and Sunday's racing but that the Don Rumble will be scored based on Saturday's racing only. (They did something similar for the 1974 Worlds at Hayling where the first four Worlds races doubled as the UK Nationals.)

This should - with any luck - make the Don Rumble awards something more than a mere echo of the Nationals awards, i.e. different awards winners that could, I hope be recognized on the Saturday evening? Since the Don Rumble is a North Bay event, such a move really needs only your approval, though I have copied the CWA Exec to let them have a chance to give input, and because, if this is deemed suitable, we would need to reinstate the Don Rumble awards flags which we decided at yesterday's meeting to do without since they were going to be total duplicates of the Nationals awards (Geoff Edwards take note!!).

Please, everyone, let me know what you think so that I can proceed with the Events Whiffle as soon as possible!!!

Thanks.

Best regards,

Uncle Al  (W3854)

PS: If Saturday racing gets washed out, we can still work with Sunday's racing to cover both the Nationals and the Don Rumble.

Hi Al:

I just got back from a trip to Austria.  Great day of skiing on Saturday and an enjoyable series of business activities leading up to it!  We had a ski race featuring 17 guys from the various companies we are associated with, including fellows from the USA, Germany, Austria and Canada.  The Austrians, who were the hosts, did not make the podium but they certainly weren’t trying to “throw” the race.  The attached picture shows the top three.

Since the next two guys are, quite literally, the bosses of my boss, people suggested I should have gone slower and let them win.  Obviously, they are thinking of someone else and don’t know me.  The Austrians were calling me the “Crazy Canuck” on Saturday night – they well remember the Ken Read and Steve Podborski lead team, the “Crazy Canucks”, that dominated the World Cup in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.  I also saw Kathy Kreiner’s name on a World Cup display at one of the local ski facilities.

You stole our “surprise” for the Don Rumble.  What you have suggested is something we were already planning except I was going to keep it in the bag as a little surprise.  Now it is out in the open.  My intention was to make the award of the Don Rumble at the Saturday night dinner (assuming the weather cooperates), leaving the Sunday open to see how many shifts in position would occur that day.  I didn’t realize there would be a flags issue, so I suppose it is a good thing you usurped our surprise.

We are going to have the first pass of the schedule of events out for everyone by the end of next week.

Best regards,

Dave
