Subject: In Memoriam: Farewell, Brian
McCleery (W828)! We Wayfarers will miss you a lot!![]() Brian McCleery (r) looked his typical cheerful self
as he chatted with Dave Hansman (l) and Uncle Al at the 2006 Ontarios. One of our most beloved Wayfarers,
Brian McCleery, passed away on Tuesday 22 April 2008 after a long
battle with a
cancerous brain tumor. Our condolences to his wife, Doris, and to
Brian's family.
A mainstay of the Ottawa Wayfarer Fleet, Brian was a fine sailor who made every regatta he came to more fun for the rest of us with his ever cheerful presence. In addition to supporting the Ottawa Fleet, either by racing his own boat or by crewing for his friend, Bill Fyfe, Brian attended pretty much every Trout Lake Wayfarer Weekend with son, Michael, and daughter, Kelly Anne. In light winds, Brian showed us all a thing or two on Trout Lake where he played the winds as if he had sailed there all his life. ![]() ![]() ![]() Brian and Bill teamed up for the windblown 1989 Worlds in Denmark where they were victims of one of the Wayfarers' more memorable practical jokes: This boat (above) was made available to Team Fyfe/McCleery by Niels Ebbehøj. The word is that Niels had been waiting for 13 years to get his "revenge" - since the '76 Worlds in Toronto where he got stuck with what he considered to be an unpardonably poor borrowed boat. A more conventional extension tiller was ultimately made available to Bill and Brian. ![]() Oops! Brian took one of the more
exciting W photos on record (above)
while on RC duty at the Ontarios a few years back, even though his
beloved W828 (being sailed by Frank Goulay and disguised as W937)
looked like it was about to be cut in half by Uncle Al. The latter did
manage to bear away and just barely avoid a collision with Frank. Brian
got so excited that he pushed the video camera's stop button by mistake
and missed Al's bearing away - and Al's ensuing smash-up with Peter at
the mark.
You will be sorely missed, Brian. Thanks for leaving us a huge store of wonderful memories that will keep us remembering you as fondly as any Wayfarer who ever sailed. I myself can hope for nothing better than that I will join you up above when my time comes. I know you'll have the rum bottle and the humorous stories ready. With much love, Uncle Al (W3854) McCLEERY,
Brian Alexander After a courageous
battle with cancer on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, age 74 years. Beloved
husband of Doris (Robins). Cherished father of Lisle (Lynne), Angela,
Michael (Tracy), and Kelly Anne. Adored grandpa/papa of Kevin,
Christine, Michelle, Alex, James, Colin, Kayla and Kyle. Loving brother
of Libby of Cobourg, Raymond (Anne) and lifelong friend of Maurice
Boyd, all of Northern Ireland. Brian will also be greatly missed by his
extended family and friends around the world. Special thanks to the
caring staff, 5-East at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus. Friends
may call at the Kars Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 1610 Roger Stevens
Dr., Kars (East of Hwy 416) on Friday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 9 p.m.
Memorial service will be held at Trinity Bible Church, 2101 Stagecoach
Rd., Osgoode on Saturday at 4 p.m. No flowers please. Those wishing may
make memorial donations to the Brain Tumor Foundation, Voice for
Hearing Impaired Children or Canadian Diabetes Association. Tributes,
condolences and donations may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com

I just wanted to share some pictures with you. Perhaps one or two of these scalawags will grow up to be sailors, not just pirates! Arrgh~ Fair winds, Bill Waller ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

2008!!!
Hi, gang:
Great
news, as you can see above! Hans and I won't be able to make it this
year since we'll be cruising W938 on the Chesapeake Bay. But do please
spread the word - I have tried to do my bit by posting a bunch of 1999-2004
June Bug nostalgia. Please let me know if you are planning to make
it to the June Bug so that I can fill in the list
of those likely to attend.
I need
pictures, results and a report - volunteers needed!!
Best
regards,
Uncle Al (W3854)

Hi Al and Gang,
Dolores and I are planning
to take this regatta in. Based on our schedule of other events we
are planning to attend, we can fit this one in nicely and it is close
to home as long we can park our motor home at the FYC grounds through
the day.
Looking forward to it,

Links page on the ISAF
website
Dear RRS friends,
I’ve convinced ISAF to create a links-page to external sites about the rules. Have a look at: http://www.sailing.org/758.php However, it is lonely up there all by myself. Perhaps you would consider to be mentioned as well? Diversity is good, the more, the merrier. Best wishes, Jos -----

Hi, Jos:
I have posted a link to
your blog which I very much enjoy from time to time. To find it, go to
my Wayfarer International site at http://www.wayfarer-international.org/ >
Wayfarer Institute of Technology > index > Racing Related Skills
> Racing Rules of Sailing > Other Rules Quizzes You Wll Enjoy (at
the very bottom of the index page). I must warn you that while I do
enjoy a challenging Rules discussion at any time, my approach to the
Rules is governed by the needs of my fellow sailors in the Wayfarer
Class (which are pretty basic and far, far removed - I'm glad to say -
from the sailing that requires umpires). So, I'm afraid you won't get
many "customers" due to the link I have posted for your blog.
I do look at your site
from time to time but most of my web time goes to promoting the
Wayfarer Class and to "feeding" my two web "empires": http://www.wayfarer-international.org/ and
http://www.wayfarer-canada.org/.
If you are not familiar with the Wayfarer, you can see lots of pictures
of W's (and a few other boat types) in my "Racing
Rules in Pictures" that a number of other classes have asked to be
allowed to use - the CYA asked its judges to critique it, and no one
has "poked holes" in it as yet.
And now of course, the
sailing season is about to start - even here in Canada - so that my
time will be devoted to racing and cruising my Wayfarer between late
May and early October, and to writing illustrated reports of these
activities for http://www.wayfarer-canada.org/.
As you can imagine, this leaves me little time for much else - although
I do get to be chief scorer for the ISAF-sanctioned Icebreaker Regatta
in Toronto in mid-May as a tiny warm-up to my racing season.
I have two Wayfarer
friends (copied) who are always telling me about Sneek and what a
wonderful sailing venue it is: Ton Jaspers who lives in Holland, and
John de Boer who I believe grew up in Sneek before emigrating to Canada
many years ago. Some day, I hope to sail there - it sounds like a
marvellous place to be and to sail.
Do keep up the good
work with your blog.
Best regards,
Uncle Al (W3854)

Thanks Al,
Be prepared that it might take some time. After ISAF agreed, it took more than 2 months before they did manage to do it! Hopefully with this page up, it’s not going to take that long again. I was impressed with the rules in pictures you have on your site. If I have time, and if I can see flaws – which I doubt – I will inform you. I’ve done some jury work for the Wayfarers over here. Please excuse me, but they were pretty casual about the RRS in my opinion. Best wishes Jos -----

Look to Windward
Hello Jos,
I received a forwarded message
from Al where your ISAF website was mentioned. So, being a bit curious
by nature, I went to take a look and much to my surprise, the first
picture I noticed was of 3 Regenboogen, 2 Frisian and one Dutch, must
have been the Holland Friesland regatta. I was born in Sneek and
learned to sail there. We started with a Schouw and in the latter years
we were there we owned een Regenboog, sailnumber # 26, named Mieke but that boat does not exist
anymore - but the keel was used for a newer boat. As you know
I have sailed a Wayfarer here in Canada since 1976 with my wife,
Dolores, as crew and we are very competitive in our fleet as we attend
most of the Wayfarer regattas in North America and can't wait to get
started again, but first we are going to do some Hobie Cat sailing
in Cuba for 2 weeks.
I will visit your website a bit more frequently from now on and it will be a pleasure to hear from you. John |
