Subject: West Coast Wayfarers

Dear Uncle Al

I have lived out here in Vancouver now for over thirty years but, I confess, grew up in the Ottawa area and learned to sail 420's, Int. 14's, and owned a Lightning while racing all of the above and larger boats.  Out here we owned a San Juan 24 for many years but sold it as we now live on the water and found the need to escape less pressing.

However, the need to get out and "mess about" on the water remains. I have always considered the Wayfarer the near perfect cabinless, trailerable, performance and camping yacht.  I sometimes refer to my condition as a classic case of the sailing or boating "2-footitis" as we do have a Laser we keep on the beach but it is not a very good
cruising, companionship or "messing about"  design.

Alas, I and my sailing contacts have never seen a Wayfarer on the West Coast and my sporadic monitoring of the Wayfarer Canada site suggests there are few of them out this way.  My options would seem to be buy east and ship or drive it out (neither an attractive option) or build a wooden version out here (nice retirement project).

I wonder if you have, from your experience, seen many western Wayfarers and have any suggestions for those of us looking to do some western wayfaring?   Do you have any suggestions for plans to build a Wayfarer and where that might be at, given model and material changes?

Any thoughts most appreciated.

Regards
Charles

Hi, Charles:

I am so sorry that I managed to let your email get lost in the shuffle until I happened across it just now. I have copied our very enthusiastic W Fleet Captain for the West Coast, Nick Parker, who will doubtless be thrilled to welcome another W fan and who will help you in any way possible, I am sure. Nick has his finger on the pulse of what might be available to buy in your area (not a lot, usually). Unfortunately, building your own wooden W is not an available option. but there is the occasional wood W reclamation project that becomes available. See my for sale page

Sounds like you have certainly gotten your share of sailing in over the years but are saving the best for last??? I know what you mean about the Laser and its limits for "messing about". Let's hope that Nick has some ideas for you. I will also insert this correspondence into Monday's Weekly Whiffle newsletter in hopes that some western W's come out of the woodwork.

Do stay in touch!!

Best regards,

Hi Uncle Al

Thanks for getting back to me.  Nick has been in touch so we will continue to track the opportunities out here in the west.  I suspect the numbers are better back east but the logistics get a bit daunting.  Who knows a road trip might be in order. I will keep in touch.

Thanks again,
Best regards

Hi Uncle Al,

We have had a very fine Rantzausminde this year. Nothing special to celebrate but there was 47 Wayfarers at the moorings, so the class is doing well when it comes to cruising! All in all I guess there have been 60 Wayfarers at Rantzausminde over the week.

Here is a link to Monica’s pictures catching the true atmosphere of Rantzausminde.

Have an excellent summer with lots of Wayfarer sailing.

Subject: House on the Rock

Is this cool or what!??

Clingstone, an unusual, 103-year-old mansion in Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay,
survives through the love and hard work of family and friends.

Henry Wood, the owner, runs the house like a camp: all skilled workers welcome. The Jamestown Boatyard hauls
the family's boats and floating dock and stores them each winter in return for a week's use of the house in the summer.

Mr. Wood, a 79-year-old Boston architect, bought the house with his ex-wife Joan in 1961 for $3,600.
It had been empty for two decades.

Clingstone had been built by a distant cousin, J.S. Lovering Wharton. Mr. Wharton worked with an artist, William Trost Richards, to create a house of picture windows with 23 rooms on three stories radiating off a vast central hall.

The total cost of the construction, which was completed in 1905, was $36,982.99.

An early sketch of the house. Mr. Wood is as proud as any parent of his house, and keeps a fat scrapbook of photographs and newspaper clippings that document its best moments. Many of the historic photos he has were provided by the company that insured the house for its original owners.

The Newport Bridge is visible from the windows of the Ping-Pong room, to the left of the fireplace.

The house is maintained by an ingenious method: the Clingstone work weekend. Held every year around Memorial Day, it brings 70 or so friends and Clingstone lovers together to tackle jobs like washing all 65 of the windows. Anne Tait, who is married to Mr. Wood's son Dan, refinished the kitchen floor on one of her first work weekends.

There are 10 bedrooms at Clingstone, all with indecently beautiful views.

The dining room table seats 14. Refinishing the chairs is a task on the list for a future work weekend.

Sign by the ladder that leads to the roof reads: No entry after three drinks or 86 years of age.
"It used to say 80 but we had a guy on a work weekend who was 84,
so I changed it," said Mr. Wood, ever the realist.
It would have been a shame to curtail the activities of a willing volunteer.

Gents,

I'm not much for following the olympics, perhaps this is why:

Chris 249 gives this beautiful answer to the Olympic question, "Can anyone tell me how [the medal race] makes it any easier to explain to a novice... or makes the sailing results any easier to understand for the casual viewer?"

"It's much easier to understand than the old system. For example:

  • In the medal race for the Men's 470, the Aussies could have finished miles behind the second-last boat and still won gold, so obviously this would have been great TV.
  • In the 49er medal race, the Danes ended up in way out of the medals (7th), so they won gold (derr!).
  • The Spaniards ended up in in the Gold Medal position (1st) in the medal race, and they logically therefore won silver.
  • The Brits got in the bronze medal position (3rd) in the medal race, and if you're following this closely it'll be obvious they finished 9th overall.
  • In the Laser medal race, Paul Goodison was second last, so it follows logically that he won the gold medal, while Murdoch won the medal race but obviously he didn't get a medal.....'cause that's how it works.

"If it's not obvious, see me after class.

"The system was designed by ISAF because (as the RS:X class president said) they wanted sailing to be like Formula 1, where the winner of the last race is the winner of the world title...once every ten years or so - even if they are dead when the championship is half over, like Jochen Rindt was when he won the F1 world title. But we choose not to let facts stand in the way of cool-sounding hype.

"It's all perfectly clear and simple, and obviously worth prostituting the sport for."

Hi Al and Julia,

How good to hear from you.  Your children must be about the same ages as ours, who are 22 and 24.

We are still enjoying life in Florida, but we love returning to the cottage on Trout Lake.  We finally brought our Laser up this past summer to leave it there and Chris had a wonderful time using it.  It is back where it belongs.  He had only used it a couple of times here after 22 years.

We just moved my mother into a retirement home in North Bay and we had a great reunion with Grace Chapman.  She is down the hall from mother.  Remember, she used to crew for George Blanchard at the Trout Lake regatta.  Speaking of George, his 96th birthday will be October 5th.  We have kept in touch and always call on his birthday.  It is the same date as our Kathryn.

All for now, but I wanted to send a note.  I hope that you are all well and still sailing.

Hi Julia,

How nice to hear from you. Bill and I saw a fair bit of the Lakes over the years so we will miss them.

We are now living at our cottage on Lake of Bays and have been for 7 years. We love it. Have made many friends but still try to keep in touch with others. Not easy, as you know. Time seems to fly!

We have three grandsons, nine grand-dogs, a grand-horse and a dog of our own. Cara and Roger are responsible for seven of the dogs and the boys. They are living in BC. Janine is in NB and has the horse and the balance
of the dogs. Mack is in Toronto and so far is unencumbered!  However, both Janine and Mack have partners, so who knows?

What are your kids doing. And are you still sailing?

We have not sailed the Wayfarer in a couple of years, but we have a keel boat that we keep in Lake Ontario and sail from time to time. At present, we are waiting for a decent weather window to move the boat from Picton
to Port Darlington. We are hoping for a nice wind from almost anywhere except the west. Also somewhat less than 30 knots!

Sorry for being out of *circulation* for a while,  but active in CPH...

Right now I am having a fairly busy period: Real Estate Agent, taxation, evaluation and a lot of documentation, and of course I must sail my W1348, but hopefully heading for Dragør in OCT 2009! Only logged 7 W-days so far, but have a delicate sweet crew now with whom I sailed 'Enterprise' in the Gulf of Siam - nice warm water, but no capsizes, only offers!

Hope you will feel gradually on top again after your heart-surgery, because I got a bit concerned seeing your complexion/make-up color on a picture, when Brandon came around in connection with the Chesapeake W-cruise!

All the very best my good yearlong W-friend with kind regards from here!  Crew + Ken, W1348"Maitken"

Dragør on the island of Amager, home of Copenhagen's airport

zoomed-out map view

For the W-world, W1348"Maitken" has moved from NOR to DEN at Dragør:
Hi and good morning! Such a really fine day, no clouds, light 'summer' breeze', and I met surprisingly many, good, old friends and colleagues at the Dragør harbour + we had a happy time when dear old (1st WAYFARER to DEN 1966+NOR 1971) W1348*Maitken* again was (back after 38yrs+3mths) at her old home-P-PLACE (nr.1 by the slipway, acknowledged by the Harbour Master) and being a celebrated old *lady* once again! Great JOY in arrangement by Ken jr./the younger and under a lovely blue sky!

And Dragør has a genuine, maritime environment, and fought bravely the British Navy with cannon boats in 1808 after the British 'thieved', totally ruthlessly, the Danish-Norwegian fleet, only possible by starting Europe's first terror bombardment, rockets and firebombs into the City of Copenhagen, killing civilians, burning the city. Militarily they could not conquer the City of Copenhagen, so the first terror war-act in Europe came about to soften the DANO-King to give away the DANO-fleet in 1807. This barbarian act caused some disturbance in England. After that the canon boats blocked the Sound, damaged the British Navy, some fatally, and captured merchant-ships trying to pass, sneaking by along the Swedish shore - but stopped by operation base Dragør!!  A wonderful, maritime place for an 'old salt', and sailing-ship-deckhand like me !

All the best.  Co

Dear Frank + Margaret and Wanderer W48,

So fantastic to come bicycling to the public library (my apartment IT not avail. for an other week and that is if I can find the box - one out of 43(!) with my 'PC-gear' ) and to find your msg - thank you indeed very much for that wonderful experience, real great! And such marvellous memories we share!

It's amazing how many people I still can recognize and also that recognize me. Well, about half the village here worked for SAS at the airport.  Have just been out to test a repair on W1348, a leak that must have come about when trailing down here from Norway. TOM my next oldest son and I were out the other day, three days after my arrival, and when close-hauled, Tack-upon-Tack, on the way back the water came in through the CB-casing as the CB was under pressure!

Fortunately the wind+speed allowed us to use the windward bailer so we just about could keep up/level and sail out the incoming water! This morning I went out under W-trysail only as it's NW about 20 gusting 25 knots. At the AP CPH they are landing towards the NW which they very rarely do, but that means the crosswind component is too great for runway 22!

Well, luckily the plaster work seems to have stopped the leak. But due my back I cannot, anymore, since long ago, pull out the W. myself so I got to use my SKODA or I *Shanghai* some Swedish tourists having a sightseeing-walk there.

Chance given, I point out along the northern side of the break-water saying: "There, my good friends, about 90 meters out from my dinghy P-lot nr.1 here, the famous W48 Wanderer was anchored, bow to rocks, in 1968 after SWS-inauguration/ start at Ven, and you can see Frank Dye's picture of his famous W.48 Wanderer (with my late wife, Mait, our youngest boys and me on board) if you bother to click in at sub.web.site www.wayfarerjoller.dk/48 . But in order to read his fantastic Summer Cruise story you'd better know Danish since it is in that language in full text there!

The 1807 bombardment of CPH came back to me from looking at a note board outside the S.C. and also a cannon -that exploded - being on exhibition there.  Of course I had all forgotten about this, but 2-3 years ago a historian on the radio told that this event, lasting 5 days I believe, was the first in Europe, earlier ones had taken place in China, who of course had the gunpowder. Many, the gentleman said, blamed Hitler for the first in Europe.

Actually the DANO-Kingdom had many things not to be proud of!  Slave trading, colonies a.s.o. trying to make a down-sized mini-copy of the Mighty Imperial GB. Among other things searching for the Westward-passage N. of NA.

All the very best to Margaret and You and W48+more such.  Ken the older, W1348"Maitken"

Hi !

KTY/Ken jr.'s W6141 Krinika of Dragør stands normally at the harbour there, closest to the slipway, from where W1348 moved northbound to NOR in the spring 38 years ago. Our intention now is to bring W1348 back to that spot and let someone else sail W6141.

The young, good-looking blonde Baroness (we didn't meet the Lady though - only seen photos !) of Chr. IV's Valdemar Castle, where the Museum is located in a former stable, supplied the white wine served at the ceremony, which was a surprise to me, being told to arrive at 12.00 sharp, which we managed. The trip back however in the 20knot+ showery, gusty headwind was a fight for survival as Svendborg Sound is very tricky with a strong current (my first sailing struggle there in 1945), especially for Jr., in another boat that would not sail if he didn't take the job to helm + skipper, and me, since we each had two newcomers as crew - and THAT makes quite a difference to all kinds of W-boathandling in strong winds that invariably included some harsh, loud commands! About 20 W.s dared the wind and weather, more people came by car.

Photos: Of very ordinary sea-women+men, W950 "MAIT-KEN" as 1/2 model by Producer and Deliverer, Lars Vibskov-Kristensen standing next to the W950"MAIT-KEN" of Kastrup that he renovated for SWS + us to install at the Museum back in 2001.

Hello from Ken Jnr. W6141 Denmark to Uncle-AL A lot of thanks for the last time in Canada for the very fine rally
(I include a word book so you please correct any misspelling yourself)

The pictures show a little of Juli 2009 in Denmark and Norway

From Dragør harbour in DK with the famous "FULTON" schooner - for larger image, click here

Fisherman in Norway (maybe W1348 Ken ?) - for larger image, click here

Fisherman maybe don't like fish, or the pictures are mixed up.

Something fell on the Fisherman's feet, maybe the fish?

Need a drink with these nails.

Instead of a pony ride it is a boot ride, Fisherman pulling.

Hungry again after the pull.

Hungry again, special Rantzausminde Rally fish
(don't now where to catch them, probably a place with many barracudas?)

Fisherman tries to climb the mast, get the sails down and start fishing. - for larger image, click here

The Fisherman has a fine present from Lars Vibskov and donates it to VALDEMARSLOT PLEASURE SHIP MUSEUM.

The real museum ship, the Fisherman sailed in a little younger age.

Fisherman sailing W6141 with his own W1348 fishing sails.

Evening play with sticks: Fisherman (l) and Jens Konge (king).
Maybe it is instructions on how to remove the fishing net poles.

Looking for the wind and current.

Evening music by Wayfarer Stompers.

Fisherman (whoever he is) going home after a long day.

Just a little fairy tale! If some person like this is really to be found in the world, it's a pure coincidence.

Best W regards, Ken jnr. W6141 Denmark

Last night at the IOC-opening Party in the Royal Opera House of Copenhagen, I was impressed and pleased to see on TV that the President of IOC said  that he was happy and pleased to have sailed in competition - at a distance(!) - with the *KIng of Dinghy Sailing* Paul Elvstrøm (4 OL-gold-medals in dinghy sailing).

Here by The Sound between Denmark and Sweden connecting the Kattegat and the Baltic Seas there are fairly often - especially this time of the year - sudden chances and gale force-plus wind conditions, the NWesterlies sweeping down from Greenland - Iceland.

W-sailing 'observing' US-President Obama win the weather window with less wind - for a period - expected this morning.  When leaving home fairly early (about 800 meters down to the parking lot for W1348) I heard on the radio that President Obama's plane *AirFORCE 1* was delayed.  He would arrive with 2 planes, type 747, so it is not to be known which one he is on.

At 9 min to 8, or 07.51 I saw *AirFORCE 1* land, and most certainly being watched by many, and definitely by a helicopter hovering right over the area, where I intended to be heading to fish for the copper-bronze-skinned cod there. Well, I thought, better stay away, too close to the airport, or that thing may blow me over!  Also the bridge-traffic across to Sweden was stopped, and I saw 3 BIG guardboats and some smaller ones on patrol between the CPH-airport and the bridge to Sweden.

Since the helicopter did not go away, but came to have a look at me,  I stayed/remained outside the Dragør harbour, took off my hat to wave it and show my very thin grey hair!  The guy at the open side door waved back with his hand not with his gun, luckily!  And they flew back to station, being convinced W1348 was not a *Stinger-rocket* carrying sailing dinghy! And also I like president Obama, and continued fishing;  did not see the second *AirFORCE 1* land though, being too busy, but at 08.17 the guards went away. Later back home the radio confirmed the landing time - that I by coincidence noted while out there - 07.51, causing traffic havoc in Copenhagen, BUT definitely we do not want anything unpleasant to happen to this man.

Some times later the whine-whistle in the rigging - my back to the wind while fishing - made me turn to discover some very black clouds coming rushing at me from the NW under escort of a beautiful 1/4 RAINBOW on the south side - very colorful against the black clouds. This made me decide that two cod, each of 1,4 kg, was adequate, and started tacking, X by X,  back for port since gale-force warnings for all sea areas here in southern Scandinavia were issued early this morning for today - and for the next three days.

So, now 'dig in' or hit your 'blow holes' the season for it is here!   Ken, W1348 "Maitken"
