Subject: NEW WAYFARER OWNERS ON WHIDBEY ISLAND, WA.

Hello,
Our names are Robert & Lena Svensson,
Swedes who now live and work here in beautiful Washington State!
We lived in Michigan before, and there we owned and sailed a 1972 WAYFARER,
but sold it to a Canadian couple when we moved out here to WA. in 2006.
Last week, we bought another WAYFARER,
this time a well equipped 1968 sailboat from Marcelo down in New Orleans
- we are now in the process of having it shipped up here
and should have the boat in our back yard by mid February or so.....
We live on fabulous WHIDBEY ISLAND, about 25-30 miles north of SEATTLE
and not too far from the SAN JUAN ISLANDS and BRITISH COLUMBIA,
so we should have lots fun with our sailboat, since we are surrounded by lakes and the Puget Sound!
So - if there is a NORTHWEST WAYFARER ASSOCIATION, we would love to be a part of that - PLEASE send whatever information you might have......
THANK YOU!!
Robert & Lena Svensson
PS. Since we moved here, we have borrowed to sailboats - a 27 ft and this 14 ft.
- but are excited to once again be sailing our own WAYFARER......

Dear Robert and Lena,

Welcome aboard!  I am the Fleet Captain for the Wayfarers in Western Canada, though I also link with Wayfarer sailors from the PNW,  on up to the Yukon and over into Alberta  In any given year, there have been a number of events where the Wayfarers are encouraged to gather.  The most successful to date has been the SOSA Rally (South Okanagan Sailing Association in Summerland, BC).  It is a wine and cheese, cruise and race event that is just plain fun.  It normally takes place around August 22 or so ... whatever that weekend is.  There are about five or six boats.

I also try to organize another event down on the coast - a cruise to some point up, over, or down the coast.  There has always been interest but never more than one other boat?  To date I have managed to find about 30 Wayfarers in the North West area but most are far flung.  I will add you to my list and keep you informed of the upcoming events.  I will also forward a list to you of the Wayfarers that I am aware of as some of them are in the Seattle area.  In fact, there was one who was an employee at Boeing.

I hope to see you on the water and to perhaps introduce you to some of the great spots up the coast.  If I can be of help please drop me an email.

Cheers,

Nick Parker, W982

PS. There was an idea of perhaps having an event in and around Port Townsend at some point - interested?

Subject: Question....

Hi Al,

Looks like there are lots of good Wayfarer things happening - all at your end of the continent. Not much happening out here at all. I am, however, gathering bits of hardware to modify W3576 into a more cruise-friendly rig - reefing gear, better kicker, etc.

I'm also investigating the possibility of adding a small jib to my inventory. I have a credit with a S.F. Bay area sailmaker from work done previously on my San Juan and I asked him for an estimate for one of these little jibs.  So far he's been unable to find the dimensions.

My question: Do you who I could contact to get those dimensions?  I looked in the Wayfarer Book and online but was not successful.

Thanks for whatever you can do.

Brandon (W3576)

P.S.  I shall miss joining you all on this year's Ches Cruise.  Perhaps I can bum a ride next year as crew and fly out.

Hi, Brandon:

Am rushed. Packing for the Midwinters: train to Windsor > pick-up by my crew, Nick, overnight at his place > 0400 his car and boat down to FL > ETA Sunday afternoon

Have copied a couple of experts who should know what you need regarding jib (vs. genoa) dimensions. There is nothing official, I believe.

We'll miss you at the Ches Cruise, Brandon!! Next year for sure!!

Wish us luck at the Mids!!

Best regards,

Subject: Bare FEET !

Dear Al,

Your 'Bare Feet'-sailing really knocks my socks off!

Memories spawn memories, so it is said, and spray becoming slush on the floorboards, while it freezes on the backs of our oilskins to fly like 'cornflakes' downwind when going about sailing closehauled in unpleasant seas and -6°C wind that we have coped with, while also banging the foredecks with the 'priest' (the heavy stick we use to hit the Cod with over the neck) in order to slide the ice off.  THAT was challenging and enjoyable, being well protected and warm, feet and elswhere, BUT your FL-FD-temperatures, chill factor and all, must have been a kind of freezing 'hell'! Still your feet did not complain - amazing!

You got to have them examined since you are most certainly an important part, also 'bare-feet'-wise, of the ongoing evolution that scientists really do love to dig into!

A severe cold winter many places, and a son phoned from Oslo to N.Norway to his parents there due the very low temperatures recorded, and his father answered: "Well, now, it ain't too bad at about -8°C.!" Happily the son commented this until the father said: "Ooh, well my son, you mean the temperature outside!"

Quite the opposite, back from SIN/Singapore we are able to report that icefishing down there is rather poor!

Please stay comfortable, all the best. Ken,W1348"Maitken"

How are you, my amazing 'bare-foot' Uncle Al!

Some while ago I sent you 'Enterprise' photos and some of them are now presented with English text on Rolf's Portal as, quote:  'Jul 2009 Sattahip' = Christmas 2009 Sattahip - click on that  - lowest left margin of my sub.web.site of the following  www.wayfarerjoller.dk/1348  click on that and to make the pictures larger click on them. Unqoute.

The Royal Varuna Yacht Clubs is where we are going to-morrow - http://www.varuna.org/locator.htm - and from where Ken jr. and I will take 'Hoby 1' to sail her, about 1,5 - 2,5 hrs., to the westside of the island of Koh Lahn  to meet our company and to operate from there for expected 4 days.

Best wishes and kind regards.  Ken,W1348"Maitken"

Hi again, Ken:

I'll look forward to hearing how the sail went after I get home - Wed 10 Feb. Have been doing walking, bike riding and sit-ups at the local YMCA gym just to show Nick how serious I am this time!!

Cross your fingers that in FL we'll get at least half of the degrees C that you are getting. Too bad about the poor ice fishing, Ken. But we all have our crosses to bear!!

Best regards,

Uncle Al  (W3854)
