Subject: A Wayfarer in Everglades Challenge 2010

Hi Al,

I’m a fan of the Wayfarer Sailboat and the Everglades Challenge small boat expedition style adventure race. http://www.watertribe.com/

I was pleasantly surprised to see that a Wayfarer (sail # 10195) is entered in this year’s event.  I thought other Wayfarer sailors might enjoy following their progress.  I’m hoping that you can get this info out to the greater wayfarer community.  (I wasn’t sure who or where would be the best place to post this info.  Heck, maybe this info has already been disseminated to the Wayfarer universe.)

The race starts on March 6th.  I believe all boats have to carry a SPOT unit for tracking and there is a mapper on the web site so competitors can be followed “live”.   http://www.watertribe.com/Events/ChallengeMapper.aspx

An interview with the two sailors after the event would make a great article for a future Whiffle and/or Skimmer.

Thanks for your time,

David

Good to hear from you, David. One of our fellow W's has already alerted me to this - see http://www.wayfarer-canada.org/00Weekly.Whiffle/100118/WW100118.html#Everglades - and I briefly contemplated entering this but it won't be this year. Maybe 2011. Meantime, I'll join the armchair QB's. Same as I got to do when I got daily reports and pics as a W sailed around Norway's North Cape!! (see http://www.wayfarer-international.org/WIC/Cruise.Logs/2005NorthCape/05NorthCape1.html)

It's a wonderful tech world we have these days, a far cry from the days I had to drive an hour into Toronto just to get one 3 by 2" black & white pic into my CWA newsletter!!

Your interview idea sounds good but I don't know that I'll have time - perhaps USWA Skimmer ed, Linda Heffernan (copied) can do something and share it with me??

Do stay in touch and/or get get a Wayfarer!!

Best regards,

Uncle Al  (W3854)

Subject: THE SKY BEFORE KATRINA STRUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had only seen the first one of these and was somewhat dismissive because skies like that are not uncommon here in Ontario. The rest are frightening !! Sorry if you have already seen them.

MOTHER NATURE CAN GENERATE  ENORMOUS POWER AND CAN BE VERY DESTRUCTIVE.

The Sky Before Katrina Struck...

Whoever took these pictures did an awesome job. And whoever said Katrina was 'awesome and terrifying' is telling the truth. Wow, take a look at this. These pictures were made by a man in Magee, MS, where the eye of the storm passed thru. What an experience. Magee is 150 miles north of Waveland, Mississippi, where the Hurricane made landfall. The dance with Katrina, part of her beauty as she left destruction on her exit. They are remarkably dramatic...

The following picture was taken from the third story balcony of Saint Stanislaus College located next door to Our Lady of the Gulf church in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi on the morning of August 29th, 2005.

This is believed to be the initial tidal wave from Hurricane Katrina. The tidal wave was approximately 35 to 40 feet high. When it slammed into the beach-front communities of Bay Saint Louis and Waveland, Mississippi to completely destroy 99% of every structure along the beach for 9 miles and over a mile inland. The destruction only started there. The flooding that continued inland destroyed the contents of all but 35 homes in these two communities of approximately 14,000 people.

Subject: Wayfarer wanted

Hi,
I noticed that you have a Wayfarer wanted section on the Canadian Wayfarer website.  Would you be able to post this for me?

I'm looking for a Wayfarer, preferably one of the later models with the fiberglass or composite hulls.  I'm on the prairies and would prefer to find something in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, or Alberta.  I also would consider a boat located at a greater distance.  Please send details to wheels02ca@yahoo.ca

Dear WI:

The idea of an official Apostle Islands rally (West meets East) is not going to work for 2010.  That leaves it open for a smaller get together/rally.  This would allow developing things to do and place to go.  I certainly will be coming to Wisconsin a few times next year, with my son now living in Verona

We should do at least a long weekend up at the Apostle Islands, and a day sail together on the Lakes near or in Madison.  Here is the link to the Wayfarer Calender so we can avoid other major events we want to attend.

http://www.wayfarer-canada.org/00coming.up/001ComingupIndex.html

For me that cuts out June 1 to 13 Chesapeake etc., July 1 to 5 North Bay area, and August 7 to 15 Killbear Park, ON.  The latter part of August thru first part of September is certainly open.  The other thing for me is hitting a good weekend for my son.

Hope to hear form you soon.

The Apostle Islands sailing grounds are only 180 miles away for us.  I expect if someone picks a few dates the Scheduling Goddess would approve at least one of them.  It does sound like fun and I would like to see this happen.

Hello,

As Chuck Smith has mentioned me in several emails and has forwarded most items my way, I thought a short email would be more than prudent. While it is true that I am a new Wayfarer owner (old new), I am not a stranger to sailing. I have sailed many sizes of boats locally and have crewed a couple while racing. Mostly a nicely restored Thistle. I am not a pro but am confident that I am more than capable of managing my way. Chuck has spoken highly of you and gotten me very excited about this trip. I look forward to meeting everyone and learning from everyone’s experience.

Hi, Jason:

Welcome to Wayfarers!! It is great to have such keen sailors as you and Chuck join our Class. And experienced as well!! Just what we need!! Where are your home waters? Do I recall Chuck being in Oklahoma? Is that where you are, too?

I look forward to having you join our Cruise "discussions" which have been livening up of late. I have copied all the known members of this year's group so that you can create your own group mailing set-up if you like. Not to mention that these guys will be keen to learn more about you.

Must rush now since I have only an hour and a bit before I have to post today's Weekly Whiffle (in which I will officially and publicly welcome you to our Wayfarer group).

Best regards,

Uncle Al  (W3854)

Fab news!! Glad you liked the DVD, but it's not my doing, it's all Al's, so I'm forwarding your message to him.

Best wishes, and I'll check out your concerns about the Killbear reservation system. I was going to make an announcement soon in any case, as the deadline is rapidly approaching.

Kit -- Your DVD arrived the very day that Bill set up our new Apple computer so I popped it in and SO enjoyed all of the photos!!  (and text)  We had never been able to open the previous years' offerings given our ancient computer.  What a treat!!

Al's note: All 2009 CWA members should have received this Yearbook DVD by now. Let us know if yours has not arrived.

Subject: Feet + W.Crew wanted !

Dear Uncle Al,

I am throughly convinced you and Nick tried to out-run anyone participating in the Mid Winters, but finally you were ironically out-run by your own bare feet - that's very tough and weird being out-run by one-self !

Really I wanted to write about 5 sailing days in 'Hoby 1' where La-iad and I sailed out from the Royal Varuna Yacht Club to the island of Koh Lan, and then sailed from there until returning back to the mainland on day 5. But then I saw Crew Wanted (below) and had to have my say!

Thinking of your cold feet I remember a guy on a long haul, three on the windward side, big waves and spray, who sat forward and exposed, getting many showers and quieter, when it dawned on me he was showing signs of the sneaky hypothermia!  Well, that's another tale.

Be good to your feet, please - it could be quite pleasant to wash them in warm water!  Ken,W1348"Maitken

Hi, Ken:

Sad to think that I was indeed outrun by my own feet which turned into my Achilles' heel!! That has never happened to me before, though it occurs to me that I may have never sailed barefoot in about 5C and winds gusting to 10 m/sec. Still, I have worn shorts and walked barefoot in snow for a good half-hour in -20C and snow (New Year's Eve 1969?? in downtown Toronto near my rooming house - having no girlfriend to celebrate with, I decided to usher in the New Year by going for a walk around the block just after midnight - a couple parked in a very steamy car rolled down their window and wished me a happy new year). So you can imagine my shock when my feet actually began to feel painfully cold. More recently I think it may have been the three nights of serious rum drinking (Thurs, Fri, Sat) that weakened my system - although I never had any hangover??

Anyway, I look forward to hearing about and seeing your Hobie trip!! My Mids pics are in the process of being posted, an enjoyable re-living of the fine if cold experience!!

Best regards,

Uncle Al  (W3854)

Subject: W.Crew wanted !
Date: Tue, 16 Feb 2010 14:42:38 +0000

Crew wanted by the Commodore !

Open Letter for a good W-friend, the Commodore of UKWA, Ralph Roberts.

You mentioned the trip to me.  Unfortunately being too old and worn out a 'tire' to apply as crew for your trip from Esbjerg to Rantzausminde, which is longer than Copenhagen - Oslo!

The West coast of Jutland/Denmark is about the most exposed one in Scandinavia, and all the wrecks along it gave a reason for making the Kiel Canal in order to avoid this danger, and get safely into the Baltic, Kattegat and Skagerack Seas. A big problem is the very few places to land and to seek shelter, so sailing ships gave it a huge margin off shore. The square-riggers often sought a good, healthy 'Northing' to pick up a tow, between Cape Lindesnes in southern Norway and Skagen the most northern tip of Denmark, into Skagerack and Kattegat Sea.

Also well offshore sailed our so far greatest W-Viking Frank Dye on his first Ocean (North Sea) crossing from Suffolk - Helgoland - Esbjerg - Kristiansand in W48 "Wanderer", but twice after starting from Esbjerg he was forced to turn back by "Horn's Reef" a 'supreme' nasty place even in moderate weather, where from 30.000 feet you can see some really white-foaming huge, steep breakers.

On his second passage there from Esbjerg to Ven - 1968 to help us start SWS - Frank and Magaret cruised peacefully along the coast in W48 and hauled out for night stops. They sailed through the Limfjord - time was running out - and got beaten around properly by Kattegat Sea's steep chop before we met at Ven.

Your knowledge and experience are good, and that is the most valuable commodity for a W. sailor (also claimed to be the stepping stones to wisdom!). You and I know that through our own stupidity, learning, getting beaten, we aim to add to the body of W-kowledge. Growth herein for ourselves - and interested friends - is more a process of being a Wayfarer than a goal in itself.

Remaining calm with 'controlled' panic - although 1/2-scared stiff - in the face of fear is an important skill, and of course a great asset to a Wayfarer. My hope is of course there will be no such serious demands.

Most hopefully you may experience a lot of - as a poet puts it: "--a ruffling of water tickling the bow!" and have a wonderful sail along this wild, fantastic coast that reminds me of the North Norfolk one - sailed there as W48- crew for  Frank D.  But I believe the dunes appear 'mightier', higher here on the Westcoast of Jutland!

Indeed, looking forward to meeting you at Rantzausminde - may fair winds and tides follow you on your voyage!

Good luck and all the very best wishes. Ken, W1348"Maitken"

Hi Ralph,

Thanks for your mail, and I know you'll plan carefully. Lucky the meteorological services (evt. try www.yr.no which is Norwegian, but starting with Dragoer Harbour) are totally diffferent now than in the old days where we got some very nasty sudden and unexpected weather changes that killed many people - in the air, on sea and land.

Another and a bit odd matter - to me - is that a Danish citizen, settled in DK (due to crooks and cheaters) cannot legally drive your UK-registered car in Denmark, e.g. in order to pick you and yr. W up from en route somewhere between Esbjerg and Rantzausminde!

But however I believe (whenever I write this word my mind registers what one got by removing the two first and the two last letters!) though, that a local Chief of Police can grant a special 'car ferrying' permission for a Dane.
Please be sure we all got your proper working mobile number (check 'roaming partners') - recalling a problem by Georgian Bay where it was needed for Ken t.y. to support you as yours did not go through.

Best wishes and kind regards Ken, W1348"Maitken"

PS: photos Dragoer Harbour: Pilot boat + W1348 nr.1 by the slip, but clearly no idea going back there as I cannot sail!

Rather weird three tropical Thai-guys took for the third year the Gold Medal in ice+snow Worlds sculpture-contest in Sapporo!)

Hi Ken,

Many thanks for the timely warning about the potentially hazardous nature of the coast. I was aware of how exposed it was, as the conditions were pretty rough when we made our passage into Esbjerg from Borkum. I also learnt my lesson about getting too near the shore as I approached Fanø. I will certainly take a very keen interest in Jens Konge's local knowledge of the coastline before I set out! - and will have no hesitation in waiting for a suitable weather window.

Best wishes, Ralph
