Subject: Exec minutes

Miinutes of the executive meeting of the CANADIAN WAYFARER ASSOCIATION held on 6 March 2010 at the home of Alastair Ryder-Turner and also attended by George Blanchard, Fred Black, Mike Codd Hans Gottschling, Dave Platt, Al Schonborn

Fred’s MINUTES of 28 Nov. were seconded by George and approved.

Kit Wallace had submitted his MEMBERSHIP report by e-mail, since he is away. His mailing out of the yearbook CDs has shaken out a number of renewals. The current total of 54 is ahead of where we typically are in March.

FINANCES have taken a $500 hit, since our digital camera’s zoom function has become wonky, and the shop gave us a deal on a latest model. This was recommended over initiating a repair, and is economical when compared to the former cost of handling optical images. Al is authorized to accept any reasonable offer for the replaced camera (and for its predecessor, an earlier generation unit).

Our EVENTS SCHEDULE for the ONTARIOS will have to be adjusted, since Ottawa is unable to host it this year. We hope that we will be invited back to Lac Deschenes in 2011. Alternative venues considered for this season were the North Bay event, and a Mississauga regatta 10-11 July, which might accommodate a Wayfarer start. The latter is our first choice, if it can be arranged.

The WORLDS will be in Weymouth this summer, followed by an Isle of Wight International Rally. They hoped that the North American contingent would some or all of a container of 6 new Hartley boats, which we would then have shipped on to Canada. But with just one USWA entry and one from CWA - and no firm orders - we are not following up on that idea. We need to be thinking about hosting the 2013 event, and if the USWA defers, we would recommend the PCYC / MSC venue that worked so well in 2004.

ADJOURNMENT was at 1100, as moved/seconded by Al / Hans. George thanked Alastair for his hospitality.

NEXT MEETING:
24 April 2010, 10 AM  at Alastair's.

Subject: Thanks and 'Entities'!

Dear Al, alias Good W-friend and 'W-Uncle Al' !

Marvellous work-performance, thanks a lot for your great achievements with your Whiffle!  Just back last night from four days at Sattahip and 'Enterprise' sailing there. The brain-washing medicine in dinghy sailing is the never-ending demands the vessel puts up for you to meet, thus making you totally forget the tax declaration, bank statement, troublesome matters, a.s.o.

Yesterday the Crown Prince's oldest daughter wanted a boat trip, so the NAVY put two guard-ships on station and made us go W + NW past the fishing harbour and the W. Navy Harbour out into the open sea. The bay we normally operate from is protected by tropical islands and two big breakwater seawalls.

Going E is the route out of this bay for the nice beach, you brought pictures from, and the restaurant there. But not wanting to interfere with the Royal family, nor Navy, we went westward, and out into the open sea off the high rocky point with the lighthouse, and found fairly big waves most certainly initiated far out by container ships of the shipping route there. To the S and SE from here open water to S. Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

First Mate La-iad was a bit concerned by the waves, and a 14ft-dinghy is so much smaller than the W., but the concern was fear of getting seasick!  All went well, and when her cellphone rang I was suddenly the lone 'entity' trying to stear, keep balance and hand-wing the jib - lacking a jibstick. A wonderful sail back in where the youngsters were making ready to launch.  Our start had been early since we wanted to catch a bus to BKK at 15.00.

The evening before on a stroll and look out-trip (hotel room at S.C. 100m from the slipway) it was a great joy to see the young people coming in and to watch their boathandling - they are very skillful!  The sun was setting, the breeze mild, about 16 knots and the rhytmic on shore waves a lovely pulse sound!  Indeed, worth being 'entities' by or on the Sea!

Tonight is my first chance - not too eager though still ice by Dragoer, so no sailing - to try to go back to Scandinavia. Could be no seat for me as the Scand. Winter Vacations are still on!

All the best Ken, W1348"Maitken" (For your INFO: Absolutely no 'bare-feet-problem' here!)

Hi, Ken:

Lovely - as always - to hear from you!! On the foot front, you'll be happy to hear I bought a pair of wet-suit booties yesterday at a scuba shop where he said he has wet suits for as little as $100, so I may invest in one of those.

Must rush to finish my Worlds entry in time for tomorrow's deadline for the entry discount. I have been holding off, waiting to hear from Jesper, and the good news finally came in this morning: he and I will sail together. See his email below - which I think you'll like.

Best regards,

Uncle Al  (W3854)

Hi Al,

Now I feel forced to make a decision, which is the only way to make me take one.
Yes, I would like to come and I look forward to a relaxed week where we sail the best we can.
All details regarding accommodation, boat, sails etc. we can discuss later.

Yesterday I was dining at Poul and Irene's together with the Norwegian Wayfarer Chairman Heinz Dieter Lützenkirchen who served up a nice little story in French.

Est-ce que tu sais la difference entre une jeune fille de dix ans et une jeune fille de dix-huit ans?
Une jeune fille de dix ans aime le chocolat et l'autre le choc au lit.

Forgive me the spelling which was given to me across the table.

Hi Al,

Great - barring the fact that I do not read/speak French, unfortunately, apart from the few words of requesting 2 beers 'avec moi sur la table' whereupon the often very nice waitress looks at me questioningly with a kind of wondering smile!  Most importantly, I never failed to get the beers, and so far no tray over my neck!

Indeed happy to learn about You and Jesper sailing again together. In the autumn on the phone with Jesper, he thought he would not go to the Worlds - so great he re-decided as you made him sign up - in some places that is called 'drafting' - even 'shanghai'ing! The water isn't very warm there as you well know, so good that your feet will be 'given a break' with new footwear.

Poul is our Chairman, but nice to learn of the promotion (by Jesper) of Heinz Dieter Lützenkirchen, called HD, of SWS W-region NORWAY. Also since I did not know about his whereabouts, but know now he is in good hands!

By the way, I bought W3822 Mk. I - like a twin sister of Maitken - from Jens Konge, who made a nice job on her. She will go to Norway after Rantzausminde to be sailed there by hopefully Chief Officer Ken t.y., 1st. Mate La-iad and me, the Old Salt, who loves to stretch out his back along the floorboards, and leave the world to the others, until we reach the fishing grounds or start trolling for mackerel+sea trout.

Last summer, in two days, La-iad, using a light casting rod, landed - to my amazement - four sea-trout, the biggest of 1,6 kg. The only sound explanation of such a rather exceptional feat is that she is not a skilled fisherman /-woman!  And I was just there onboard, jaw sagging, losing mouth water in near-shock surprise, gripping the tiller extension quite hard to stay sane! Such a miracle does not happen often, maybe and/or ordinarily about 3 to 4 trout in a season including ice-fishing!

The next day, we sailed 3 hrs. down the fjord to visit friends - here from L.A./LAX - in their summer house, and the two ladies with 'christmas candle' lights in their eyes, mixed the good salad (sorry, Al!) and took care of the biggest sea-trout, while Trigg and I had
on the table - without knowing what was in our eyes - good American Bourbon, and two big steaks on the grill - a great feast, and a splendid view over the fjord of lovely sails from the terrace about 500 ft. above MSL.

By the way I did not get a seat last night for CPH. At first, I was the only staff accepted as they expected not enough weight available, but then they shifted four late paying PAX to Thai Airw. Int. and got weight enough for two, so then I was beaten by a Ground Staff Guy (with wife) younger than me, but having collected retirement years until he was 67 years, where I was 'defrocked'? 'plates removed' at 60 years. That's the game and really I do not mind staying. No sailing from Dragoer yet due to ice.

Hi, Ken:

Jesper phoned this AM to let me know he can't sail the Worlds after all.  :(   To make a long story short, neither he nor I will be sailing this Worlds. Instead I will take the opportunity to spend "our" cottage week with Julia instead of in England. I have a lot of sailing-related expenses this summer already, so passing on the Worlds helps in that regard, too.

About the French: Sounds like you know all the French you need!! The joke won't be funny when translated but FYI, it asks what the difference is between a 10-year-old and an 18-year-old girl. That being that the little girl likes "le chocolat" but the 18-year-old likes "le choc au lit" (the shock/bump/bounce? in bed).

Will now add those lovely pics you sent to your piece of today's WW.

Best regards,

Uncle Al  (W3854)

Rolf please when you feel like - having time - please put the pictures and text on Ken t.y.'s subweb.site as he took them - thank You very much.  Ken t.o.

Many of these will be familiar to you but they are good fun.

Steven Wright's Humor..
If you're not familiar with the work of Steven Wright, he's the famous erudite scientist who once said: "I woke up one morning, and all of my stuff had been stolen and replaced by exact duplicates."  His mind sees things differently than most of us do. Here are some of his gems:

1. I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
2.  Borrow money from pessimists -- they don't expect it back.
3. Half the people you know are below average
4. 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.

18. Hard work pays off in the future; laziness pays off now.
19. I intend to live forever... So far, so good.

Uncle Al,

Not sure if you are getting any news on the Everglades Challenge.  They experienced 25 knots of wind and 8 foot seas.  The Wayfarer capsized and dropped out.

Uncle Al, it looks like the Wayfarer record remains open for you and Marc.

From the Duckworks website:

"And Combs was not the only boat lost last night; the Wayfarer dinghy also capsized and was lost. The crew, Sir Percival (John Naser) and Blackwater Knight (Kenneth Winder), is safe; that’s the only word so far. There has been some less dramatic trouble, too. Meade Gougeon has pulled out of the race after Yello Thing broke its rudder. The picnic table I’m writing on has turned into a workbench, with hacksaws and drills and broken rudders from another boat."   http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/10/reports/ec/index.htm

Thanks for keeping me - and everyone, now that I am posting in tonight's WW - up to date. Have copied Marc and expect we'll seriously discuss this matter at Rock Hall. I'm inclined to think 2011 may find us there as part of the fleet.

I can't thank Pelican enough for his sportsmanship.  When I started this adventure, I had the impression that watertribe was filled with the kind of people I'd like to know.  Pelican proved this with his rescue of SirPercival and me.  Pelican!!! Thank you very much.  I wish you good winds and a safe trip. You will be in my prayers.

Here is a bit more information about the guy that rescued the Wayfarer guys:

"Sir Percival and Blackwater Night's Wayfarer 16 sailboat capsized off shore near Venice the first day. Nick "Pelican" Hall came across them and loaded the two large fellows onto his Hobie Tandem Island and ferried them to the beach. In the process he damaged his boat and had to have parts delivered from Tampa. After repairing his boat on the beach, he resumed the race, arriving at Checkpoint 1 midday Sunday. Nick was concerned that the parts delivery would be a rule violation, never mind that he performed a difficult rescue at sea."

"Nick Hall (aka Pelican) arrived in his trimaran. Nick's the guy who rescued two racers off the capsized Wayfarer last night. In the process of climbing aboard Nick's boat, one of the Wayfarer's crew broke an ama off Nick's rig. He had to call his wife in Tampa, who delivered the needed parts for the fix. Since Nick was late because of a rescue, he's not out of the race. He's looking to fill up some water and get back out there to make up lost time. He'll be the last official racer through CP 1--everyone who still has a shot is gone."

Not sure what to make of it, but there is a SPOT signal dated 3/8, 11:55am that shows SirPercival drifted quite a bit south of the capsize location.  I had heard that they lost the boat and this seems to confirm, though not positively.  I hope this is in time for a late entry into the Weekly Whiffle.

Gary
