Subject: Count Down to Hermit Island - no. 3

Hello Everyone,

My new companion is Jane Korver.  Jane lives in Geneva, Ohio, which is a little less than an hour east of Cleveland and is in the heart of Ohio's picturesque wine growing district.  Dinghy sailing is a new experience for her, but she has heard much about Maine, our great rallies, and our Wayfarer gang.  So she is looking forward to meeting all of you and getting doused with plenty of salty spray.

This could be the last mass e-mailing as we'll be meeting soon at Hermit Island.  However, several overseas participants are still finalizing travel plans, so Tom Graefe and I will continue to be available for them.  If any of you have questions or something you want to bring forth, feel free to contact us.

Activities.
Saturday is arrival and set up day.  There are no planned activities.  You may want to check on the tide times in order to launch your boat near high water, Saturday if possible.  Jane and I will be arriving Thursday and will already be set up.  If someone in the overseas group wishes to arrive early, we'll have room on our site to accommodate them.
Sunday morning will be the first skippers' meeting and include introductions.  Check with me or Tom Graefe for meeting location and time when you arrive.
Day trips during the week will have favorable tides for morning (ebb) departures and afternoon (flood) returns.  The times will be early at first, then gradually becoming later as the week progresses.
Lunch stops and breaks from sailing will include the restaurant in Cundy's Harbor, picnicking on Elm Island and other places of that nature.
A night out for dinner will be planned once we are together.  Remind us to cover this at the Sunday skippers' meeting.
Friday's Lobster & Clam Bake.....a request has been made and granted that this be declared a 'Black Tie affair'.  It's a small price to pay for a little fun offered by the renowned Bruise Sisters....so now you've been warned.  (Ladies, there may be some recruiting taking place.)  We will meet on the beach early, so get those boats hauled out promptly.  We will only do a short sail.  The cost of the lobster dinner will be around $30 ea.

At recent N/A rallies, we have enjoyed a lot of joint/shared meal get togethers.  This is a terrific way to really get to know one another and it lightens the work.  It is suggested those interested look for opportunities to move around within the group and enjoy this kind of camaraderie.

Equipment needs.
The Wallaces and/or Harkins are providing Dick with two camp chairs for the Jaspers.  He still needs an additional cooler.  The Wallaces are getting an extra camp stove for the Scraggs from the Harkins.  Are there any other needs?

Crew Space for Overseas Folks.
Those skippers whom I expect will be looking for crew are: Alan Asselstine; Andy Douma; and Gary Hirsch.  Others might include: Tom Erickson and André Girard.  We are also anticipating having Frank Pedersen's Wayfarer available for overseas folks.  Crew members may want to move around between boats for more fun.  Skippers, let us know if you expect to have space in your boat.

Extra Boating Equipment.
We need extra PFD's for overseas visitors.  Also, an extra waterproof bag or two might be welcome.  Is there anything else they might need?

Dock Space.
By normal coastal Maine standards, Hermit Island's boat landing is spacious.  But it is a floating dock that rises and falls with 10-foot tides....so there is a practical limitation to size.  Disregarding the other campers' boats, our fleet of 15 Wayfarers is going to overwhelm this float.  (Fortunately about 4 boats will be moored at the marina...but there are still too many boats to be accommodated.)  There are two or three additional moorings set out in the channel, but these could be occupied as well.  So please anticipate that you may have to anchor your boat out.  (The bottom is mostly mud....so if you dry out your hull will be okay.  I will be setting out my own mooring for Blue Mist.)   Those who are lucky enough to find dock space when returning from sailing, need to stick around so that the others behind you can discharge passengers.  Following that, we hope you will want to offer ferry service for those on anchored boats.  The reverse will be true in the morning before departing.  We don't want to leave someone standing on the dock. When  aware that someone is trailing behind, send a crew member to fetch you a beer while waiting for the late arrival.  They  will appreciate your assistance.

Declaration of Compliance.
We will be asking all skippers to sign the same "Declaration" as last year.  Unfortunately I have lost this file and don't have time to recreate it now.

Happy sailing................DICK
