Subject: Aug. 7-14 2010 North American Wayfarer Rally

Aug. 7-14 North American Wayfarer Rally #11, Killbear Park, Parry Sound, ON

In 2010 from August 7 to 14, the North American Cruise rally will return to Killbear Provincial Park, Parry Sound, ON.  Killbear, located at the entrance to the expansive and picturesque Parry Sound in the heart of Georgian Bays 30,000 islands on Lake Huron, is southern Ontarios premier park.  The park is huge and occupies an entire peninsula. It consists of seven individual campgrounds with a total of nearly 900 campsites.  Located within a mature forest setting, the campsites are large, attractive and offer lots of privacy.  Comfort facilities are the best anywhere.

As in 2004 and 2007, the rally will be centred at the Lighthouse Point Campground on the south shore of the peninsula, which consists of white sandy beaches interspersed between rugged granite outcroppings.  It is excellent for swimming and for mooring or beaching the boats.   The crystal clear, but cool, Lake Huron waters are comfortably warmed in the shallows of the beaches.

The rich and scenic geography of the Georgian Bay region offers a perfect setting for the rally.  This location promises many picturesque and exciting sailing opportunities.  Consisting of more than five by six nautical miles of open water, with a depth of over 300 feet, Parry Sound alone offers numerous places to explore.  Previous excursions have included sailing through the famous Hole in the Wall” (this is a must!) as well as a trip into the quaint town of Parry Sound for lunch and sight-seeing.  In the opposite direction, outside Parry Sound, lies the mind boggling expanse of Georgian Bay with its many thousands of islands.  There are far more potential destinations than a week of sailing could possibly cover.   Certainly high on the list of possibilities will be a return trip to the Pancake Islands, a small group of grassy rocks far out in the middle of the sea, where we had great fun landing and picnicking.

Killbear is an Ontario Provincial park and bookings can be made on the phone or over the internet. Bookings will be accepted up to 5 months in advance of your arrival, which means campers can call on January 1, 2010 to make a reservation for June 1, 2010, or March 7, 2010 for August 7, 2010. Details are available at http://www.ontarioparks.com/english/internet_rules.html. As Killbear is very popular, you need to plan now to register in March.

There will be more specific information regarding the rally coming along soon. However, if you wish, you can e-mail Alan Asselstine at majam41@gmail.com, Tom Graefe at tmgraefe@comcast.net, or Dick Harrington at rmharrington@sbcglobal.net.

Great, Alan! And naturally, the moment this arrived, I happened to be removing outdated files from my Coming Up folder and came across what we'd all been looking for. I have reposted it without any links at http://www.wayfarer-canada.org/00coming.up/2010Rally/07Rally_notice.html in case we'd/you'd like to put the two together???

Best regards,
