Having discussed the matter at
some length, Marc and Al (far left)
have decided that the race 1 shifts were an anomaly that was not likely
to happen again any time soon. It is Marc's turn at the helm - note Al
actually hiking!! - and he has made no mistake in grabbing the best
start at the slightly favoured RC boat end. Since this was not a case
of a recent starboard lift, we decided we should - once again - head
left. Not too much later, Marc and I were able to tack, sit on the
fleet, and with SHADES firing
on all cylinders (so to speak), roll to a convincing win. - for full view of this pic, click here

| Scott (red hull) made his debut
as a Wayfarer helm in race 2. Here he is either just learning how high to point a W or returning after being over early? ... |

| Geoff (l), Butch (3951) and Jim Lingeman
(3991) are off to fine starboard starts. Dave Moring (10245) is in fine
shape, too, with lots of clear air. Joe (red hull) has tacked to follow
Al (which we were happy to see, Joe having placed 2nd in race 1). ... |

A close battle over 4th place
at the start of the first run: Dave (10245) is working to hold off
Peter (2198) and Richard (10139) who is doing much better in this race. If he can stay clear of
Jeff (3917) and Tony (4105), Butch (3951) is well placed to make gains,
sailing a straighter course towards the leeward mark. Butch is also
strategically well place, since the left side of the run will leave him
with the right of way should he converge with any boats coming in from
the right side, plus, Butch will be inside for room at the leeward mark!

the leeward mark. Here, he keeps the spinnaker flying nicely as Nick completes the pole transfer. ... |

been away: Jim and Linda Heffernan roll along in 2nd place under spinnaker near the leeward mark. ... |

Jim (l) and Joe (red hull) hold port
around the mark, and why wouldn't they? The right side of the beat was
good to the leaders up the first beat and not much seems to have
changed. Looks like Butch (blue hull) has indeed done well by sticking
mostly to the rhumb line: note how he's now placed for buoy room. Dave
(10245) has also done well by staying low. If he now converges with
Geoff (4th from right), Dave
will have starboard, buoy room or both. Still well within striking
distance are Jim (3991) Richard (10139) and Tony (4105). - for full view of this pic, click here

| Marc (3rd from left) gives a textbook
example of how to protect a sizable lead: Here, he and Al have put half
their lead on each tack. To stay between their nearest pursuers and the
windward mark, they will ... ... |

right right with Jim and Joe, thus remaining between them and the next
mark. The rest of the fleet remains in a close, exciting race: (l to r) Butch, Richard, Geoff
