A nice port lift to roll in on. Actually this was a very odd shift insofar as it didn't really ever extend very far along the original port-tack layline, as can be seen below where Rob Wierdsma (2nd from left) is still cruising along in the old wind while not very far away, Andrew (3rd from left) is in a wind that would put Rob head to wind. Strange stuff.

What was supposed to be a dead run was now a beam reach (90° veer!!), and those of us with catching up to do
- all but Mark and Paul (r) - were not overly thrilled at this turn of events, either.

Being the first to get away from the dreaded windward shore, Mark and Paul soon had a healthy breeze while ...

... the rest of us struggled to find wind. Alastair (l) and Dave H. seem to be getting into the breeze now, too.

Andrew and Lori (3140) are lying 2nd here with Alastair and Dave H. (out of this picture to the right)
as well as John (4th from left) and Uncle Al (l) all in the hunt for 3rd.

Wisely sticking to the rhumb line are Andrew and Lori, unlike ...

... (l to r) John, Dave H. and Alastair, all of whom ended up sailing lots of extra distance by pushing each other up.

Depressingly flawless form being shown by the race leaders ...

John and Alastair (l) have lost major distance to Andrew who will shave the RC boat as he and Lori ...

... stick to the rhumb line to the leeward mark.

Having run down with the best of the puffs a bit, Al and Michele will pass to leeward of the RC boat here.

They think they are lying 3rd but could easily fall to 6th if ...

... they don't keep their small lead over these three boats to windward: (l to r) Dave Hansman, Alastair, John. Not to forget that in light of this shift we have gotten, the race is, for all intents and purposes, over at the next mark, since the last half a leg will no longer be a beat but a close reach!!

This fight among the three windward boats is great news for Al as they continue to push each other up and into sailing a longer distance.
...

Dave Hansman has wisely "folded", leaving John and Alastair (10137) to do battle with each other. Dave could do two things to advantage here: 1. add vang to keep his boom level (no doubt forgotten in the recent excitement, note the pretty but inefficient main twist), and 2. go down more radically with this nice puff in order to make good and sure that he'll be free of any wind shadow effects.
