the 2008 Warm Water Regatta
Race #1 pics - 3
pics by Joanne Van Kampen and Rick Goldt

...

Second reach coming up: the dog-leg from #2 around the point to #3. The question will be, is it worth popping the chute for that short run from the point to #3? I believe that several of us did this successfully, but not in the first race.
...

Julia and Al get the first of a series of gusts just after gybing onto the second reach.
...

Looks like mid-season form for Julia and Al who have gradually pulled away.
Perhaps Al's recent week sailing on the Chesapeake Bay is paying off (time in the boat!!)

...

A bit too much heel for SHADES. At this speed, that translates into major weather helm, so the main is on its way out, and ...
...

... the problem is ...
...

... solved. Judging from the downward angle of the ...
...

... end of the boom, I'd say we have ample vang here!
...

Same thing for Dwight and Pat, except that ...
...

... Pat seems to be hiking harder???
...

Mike and Lilly just ...
...

... sail nicely along. Lilly looks a tad bored, Mike. Hope she brought a book!
...

Marc with Julie (864), and Brian with Crystal: not quite enough vang for the perfectionist (boom not level)
...

Invasion trucks right along in ...
...

... Roger's and Rae's capable hands.
...

A bit less main twist (i.e. more vang) would likely not hurt ...
...

... Al Nichols and Ken Nethercott.
...

Kirk and Virginia reach along with their unique tri-radial ...
...

... genoa.
...

Leo and Daryl
...

Kirk (l) is sailing a bit too high of the rhumb line (needless distance!!) - almost straight at the windward mark
whereas our next mark is the leeward mark which is off to the right around the point.
...
The second beat: Al (l) continues to defend against Dwight (2nd from left) by staying between him and the windward mark.
...
Judging by the angle of his tiller, Al is fighting a bit of weather helm here, but not much.
...

Having hit a soft spot in the wind, Al checks the leech tickler to make sure his main is not oversheeted, while Julia ...
...

... keeps the oh so important good look-out.
...
