Tsk! Tsk! Uncle Al (3854) has been a bit slow to ease his main (note tiller angle that reflects excess helm) but you can bet that the sail is on its way out at this very moment!! Flawless form, meanwhile, for Dwight and Pat (l): main well eased to keep the boat from heeling too much, while lots of vang tension keeps the main from twisting more than it should.

As Al and Ken round first, Uncle Al tacks to port to lay the mark, as Dwight crosses on starboard. Now that the last-second huge lift on starboard that Al had fondly hoped for, has not happened for him, Uncle Al is thinking ahead to the first reach. He and Julia agree that, since the wind has backed (shifted counter-clockwise, as opposed to a veer which is a clock-wise shift) significantly out on the main part of the course, the upcoming reach will likely be too close to make it worth flying the chute.

Al Nichols and Dwight round a close 1-2 and Uncle Al (far right) is pleased to be far closer to the leaders than he once was! Kirk ...

... meanwhile zeroes in on a 4th-place rounding, also still very much in the hunt. Heading right for the gybe mark,
Al (3854) confirms that this reach - at the moment at least - is indeed far too close to permit the spinnaker.

Also still pretty close to the leaders are Brian (6082), Roger and Marc (r).

The second reach: Julia and Al have moved into the lead by being the first to pop the chute after shaving the ...

... point that creates the dog-leg effect. Conestoga is odd in that quite often, these two reaches produce one that is too close for the spinnaker, followed by another that is still too close. Here, the boats have at last reached a shift which will permit ...

In this duel of CSC boats, Al has the inside track on buoy room over Dwight.

Almost at the leeward mark: (l to r) Al Nichols, Dwight, Kirk

Once everything is properly stowed after the spi douse, Al and Julia put in a brief hitch on starboard, and ...

A recent veer lets Marc and Julie (864) gybe before they reach the leeward mark and they will join a lovely spinnaker parade ...

Hoping that they can hang on until the mark without Roger getting past, are Brian and Crystal.
