Marc and Julie: pictures of patience (albeit grim patience!)
...

Now Al and Joanne will find out whether or not they ...
...

... will need to gybe.
...

Apparent wind now down to not a heck of a lot!
...

In retrospect, I should have gybed here: defend the left and all that.
Roger (7700) turns more slowly and keeps his speed up a little longer.
...

Frustration for Al (3854) but not for Mike (CAN90) who reaches the mark in a nice puff, and wisely ...
...

...decides to gybe, having seen what not gybing seems to have done for/to Al and Rog.
...

As Marc (864) arrives on the scene, the three leaders finally begin to escape from the shadow of the windward shore.

The first spinnakers are being set. Roger gets a better apparent wind by luffing up but the extra distance he's sailing
may end up being a high price to pay, especially since he's out on the non-buoy-room side in such a close fleet!!
...

Aboard SHADES (red spi), Joanne gets on-the-job spinnaker training in the toughest of conditions.
Marc and Julie, meanwhile, have their pink and blue marauder nicely set and drawing already.

Mike and Lilly (l) roll the dice and go far left.

And here we have Dwight (4606) and Leo bringing up the rear.
...

No sooner do Al and Joanne (l) have the spinny more or less up and flying, than Marc and Julie begin a gybe that ...
...

... looks to be a good idea. Stay tuned for our next installment!
Find out if nasty Uncle Al will really take advantage of innocent, inexperienced young Joanne by making her gybe.
