Lying 2-3-4 early on the first reach are the Koflers, the Schonborns and the Gottschlings. Here, Julia gets the pole up as Al has decided it's spinnaker time. That spinnaker proves to pay big dividends in the form of planing possibilities in the long gusts, especially if you go up in the lulls and down with the puffs.

View from the gybe mark: Al and Julia (l) have passed the Koflers (r) and are now challenging Alfie and Mike for the lead. Many of the other boats have had trouble sailing their spinnakers this close to the wind and have disappeared off to leeward.
