Conestoga's Van Kampens Win At Mississauga
Mississauga  Sailing Club - Wayfarer/CL16 Regatta September 12/13, 2015

Weather conditions - wet, windy and about 20 degrees cooler than the previous week - put a few competitors off so numbers of entries down to 10.

Day 1

Winds from the north - with a big swell put even more off and only 7 boats actually started race 1, 6 Wayfarers and 1 CL16. Colin Junkin crewed by Paul Taylor got the best start and led the fleet to the windward mark. The course was windward/leeward and the spinnaker legs were particularly "rolly" - even so newbies David and Jillian Haight flew the spinnaker in challenging conditions without too much incident - full credit to them for going for it. Race 2 was much the same except Rob and Daniel Wierdsma's "Seraphinoff" incident - Rob got a little too attached to the spinnaker pole half way through the first tack of the race - the ensuing capsize meant playing catch up for the rest of the race.
After 2 races the race committee called it a day - an early BBQ, beers, some sailing videos, plenty of good conversation finished the day on a high.

Day 2

Less wind and flatter water on Sunday morning encouraged 2 more boats to join the racing. Winds were from the north west and the approach to the windward mark, just off Port Credit, was shifty with lots of nervous sitting out. The 1st 2 legs passed without incident however the wind was building and was still shifting which resulted in David and Anne Pugh capsizing - the boat turtled and by the time they got it upright the rest of the fleet were on the final leg. The stronger wind benefitted Rob and Daniel who passed Mike and Marg Duncan to win race 3.
The gusty conditions and one further capsize,  resulted in the race committee calling the racing over for the day!

Final results
1st - Leo and Joanne van Kampen - consistent with 2, 2, 3
2nd - Rob and Daniel Wierdsma - 3, 5, 1
3rd - Colin Junkin and Paul Taylor - consistent with three 4's - they also won most improved.
David and Jillian Haight won the rookie prize.

Congratulations also to Ziggy Dudek with Rod McIver winning the CL16.  Complete results here.
