Codd, Iredale Score First Majors Win!

(180817) Wind and rain wreaked havoc with the 2018 Wayfarer Ontarios at TS&CC July 21-22. On Saturday, east winds of 12-18 knots were just what the doctor ordered for our two heavy-air specialist teams: Mike Codd with Kirk Iredale in W4600 and Alastair Ryder-Turner with son, Andrew in their Mk III W10137.

6th-seeded Mike Codd and Kirk Iredale were easily  the 2018 Ontarios Most Improved team.

A Sunday morning deluge and even stronger winds brought a wise abandonment of further racing at 0925 hrs. by PRO, John O'Dwyer, and the Codd/Iredale team were declared 2018 Ontario champions on the strength of their 1-2-1 finishes the previous day.
For Mike, this was his first win in a "major" as a skipper although he was the winning crew in the first-ever Ontarios in 1981 on Lake Couchiching, and also in 1996 at Lac Deschênes. Only one point back at 2-1-2 were the Ryder-Turners.

Heider Funck with Tom Wharton

Locals, Heider Funck and Tom Wharton (above) took 3rd place by just a single point over the top seeds,
Sue Pilling and Steph Romaniuk of Parry Sound (below).

Jan d'Ailly with son, Hendrik

Conestoga's Jan and Hendrik d'Ailly were a very solid series 5th, beating their seed by an impressive four places in the 11-boat fleet. The Mississauga SC's husband/wife duo of David and Anne Pugh (below) had a puzzling case of the slows this time around, placing series 6th.

The 2nd-seeded Pughs did have one big claim to fame in the event - they were the only ones to risk flying a spinnaker (below).

None of the remaining five teams finished even one race in the rough conditions and thus ended in a 5-way tie for 7th place.

TSCC's Kit Wallace and George Waller (above) capsized in race 1 and decided to call it a day, as did their clubmates,
Bob Stevenson and Dirk Townsend (below).

Big marks for effort to MSC's Rob Wierdsma and daughter, Samantha (above) who broke their mainsheet bridle in race 1, went ashore for repairs, came out for race 2, went back to repair the repair and finally got everything squared away just in time to make it to the start area for race 4. Only to discover there would be no race 4. But as can be seen above, it was the kind of a day on which the sailing alone was a lot of fun.

I got no action shots of the other two teams and so am making do with a couple of appropriate shore shots below.

Scott Ramsay (r) and Les Sherratt (W8263) out of Conestoga.

TSCC's John Cawthorne and Robert MacDonald (W10863).
