Storer Trophy 2000
captured in comeback over Peter and Alex Rahn
by Al Schönborn, Marc Bennett, Riley Bonham and Frank Goulay

Perhaps the most exciting finish in the history of the Richard Storer Trophy came at the 2000 Wayfarer North American Championship where Peter and Alex Rahn held a 6-point lead over (under??!!) the totals amassed in the first three of the Wayfarer Big Four, by Al Schönborn, and his crews, Marc Bennett and Riley Bonham. Since Peter and Alex had averaged fewer than 7 total points in each of the first three majors, catching up six points looked to be a tall order for Uncle Al and his North Americans crew, Frank Goulay.
But they did it! Al and Frank scored only 5 points in winning the 2000 North Americans while Peter and Alex slipped to a 5th off 21 points. Thus the Storer Trophy champions for the year 2000 are:

Al Schönborn, Marc Bennett, Riley Bonham and Frank Goulay

Peter and Alex Rahn scored a clear second over Heider Funck and Tom Wharton who paid the price for not sailing more than two of our four main events. In 4th overall we had Roger and Carl Shepherd along with Joanne Kumpf, while Keith Haill and Samantha Hodder rounded out the top 5. Well done, gang!
Of 37 boats that sailed at least one of our Big Four events, only John and Joan Goldi (in addition to the Rahns and Uncle Al) sailed all four events. A disappointing state that you can help to fix in 2001!
