the June Bug Regatta * Race #5
photos by Kevin Biskaborn and Rick Goldt
 Race #5: B > 6 > 4 > A > 6 > 1 > B  Winds: 4 - 8 knots NW. Conditions very similar to race #4.
..
A fine start opposite the Race Hut for Len Macdougall and Peter Wilkins (right) if he can stay clear of John Goldi's backwind - and for Al ...
..
... if he can stay out of Dwight's backwind (4606). The news is not so good for Peter Rahn in 5631 who can expect dirty air from Al who loves to pinch!
..
Seconds later, a bit of a lift has brightened the Rahn perspective
but made things look dim for Dwight (4606), Grant (9239) and Robert Kennedy (extreme right).
...
Peter (5631) keeps Al (3854) pinned on starboard tack - and Al hates it when that happens!!!!! Actually, it looked like Peter and Alex would win this one until Al outguessed them in the shift paradise near #6 and got around with about 100 metres of lead. With excellent spi work and very little weight from crew, Dave, Al continued to pull away down the two free legs ...
..
... until ...
...
... he was reasonably well clear ...
...
... of his pursuers such as John Goldi (1320), George Blanchard (CAN80) and Robert Kennedy (3571) and ...

... Peter Rahn (5631), Brian Jeffs (9235), Dwight Aplevich (4606) and Grant Town (9239) who are all in the thick of it.
...
And Al Nichols (7380) is still a threat here!
..
Peter and Brian in a close duel while Len Macdougall (behind Peter's spi) is ready to pounce!
..
A slight windward heel: perfect form to help an undernourished spinnaker!
..
Grant Town helps his spi by lowering the pole a bit.
..
Playing the far side, John and Joan Goldi get a nice little puff.
..
Beat #2: Uncle Al covers Peter as they rounds mark A and head back up to #6.
..
Grant Town (9239) rounds 3rd while Jens Biskaborn (7663) has just rounded in 4th over Brian Jeffs.
Six boats neck and neck for 6th. Should be a mess at mark A!
..
I'd rather not be part of this mess!
..
Note the different winds being experienced by the various boats - less than 100 m. from A. Ah! the joys of Fanshawe!
..
It's neck and neck!
..
Fast forward to the end of the final run:
First-place Al is somewhere behind George's sails (CAN80) while Peter Rahn and Dwight Aplevich have gained a solid grip on the 2-3 places.
..
Brian Jeffs seems to be about even with the Goldis for 4th while George lurks in 6th.
..
And not for behind them are Len (6732) and Robert (3571). On the far left, race leaders, Al and Dave.
..
An idyllic Sunday morning on Fanshawe Lake.
..
And here are two more contenders, Jens (7663) and Grant (9239) possibly using local knowledge to sneak in from the extreme right.
..
Good close exciting racing but, as can be seen, patchy winds!
..
Still moving on the far right are Jens and Grant.
..
And Al Nichols in 7380 with the yellow and blue chute!
..
Nice lighting as John Goldi (1320) and Len Macdougall (6732) approach #1.
..
In the end, it was Al, Peter and Dwight placing a pretty comfortable 1-2-3, while Brian Jeffs held 4th over the onrushing Grant Town and John Goldi. 7th place went to Len Macdougall ahead of Al Nichols while George Blanchard's unlucky final beat left him in 9th. Jens Biskaborn also experienced some calm moments on the final beat and fell to 11th behind clubmate, Robert kennedy in this extremely close race.
